Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
lmao, yeah 92RS is the man to talk to if you want 400hp from your 305. of course that engine follows the same rules as every other internal combustion engine. its an air pump, anything you can do to get air into and out of it easier, makes power. also eliminating friction and parasitc drag will make more power. start with headers, high flow cats, and exhaust. port and polish the heads, or better yet, get a set of 305 torqers and play with em. put in a cam, as far as what type, call comp cams help line, they are the only people i would use for that. an edelbrock performer intake, they do make them for TBI applications and TPI applications. a high flow throttle body either a 58mm for TPI or a holley unit fot TBI. K&N air filter. proper tuning to go along with al the mods. yadda yadda, all the old school stuff still applies. have fun

Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
Man, he posted a thread "calling 1992RS" and I wrote a lengthy responce and posted it and it was gone..I was like WTF I had p/n's and technical info and a lot of years of insight...and BTW the performer made for TBI sucks big balls. I'd go with the performer with a TBI adapter plate if you have the "sniffer" test and the RPM if you don't have to worry about it.

Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
Well I don't feel like looking up P/N's again but I'll give you a list of things and you can get most of them from jegs. 335 stroker kit from enginekits.com there powerhouse engineering..great company. Get the 40 over pistons and have your block bored 40 over. But I'd wait till you got the kit so they can acutaly match the pistons to the cylinder. World products S/R torquer 305 heads, Edelbrock performer(for emissions) or performer rpm(with out emissions) Holley TBI to square bore adapter, holley 670cfm TBI unit. It's going to be listed for an 87-89 truck but don't worry about it, get the one for the 5.7 as you'll have like 345cid with the stroker and 40 over. a good set of shortie headers, perferably ones made for camaro like Edelbrock TES. if you have emissions get a highflow coverter and the flowmaster american thunder 3 cat back or pacesetter if you can find one on ebay, it's way better than flowmaster..sorry flowmaster enthusiasts, they are better. They have a three inch pipe all the way to the muffler and 2x 2 1.2 outs. If you don't have emissisons get rid of the TES Y pipe and get a good 3" X pipe, some 3" exaust pipe to a set of flowmaster 40 series. If you go this way put the X as close to the headers as you can. Mount the mufflers infront of the rear axle and get some more pipe bent at a local muffler shop to go over the rear. Get some header tape and wrap both pipes all the way back, mostly for the driver side and the fuel lines..yeah good idea. The cam is up to you, if you can afford to get a custom ground cam go for it, talk to the machinists and tell them what your doing and what you want out of it and they'll set you straight. But if not I'd go with comp cams extreme engergy. double roller timing chain, underdrive pullies. high flow water pump, low temp thermo, custom chip, and find a way to get as much cold air in your engine as you can.

Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
what makes you think that the flowmaster dont have a 3" pipe all the way back??? mine even has 24in long 3in diameter chrome tips on it. a 3in slip on cat and all. and the 80 series muffler
waitin on my headers so i can bolt it up and listen to it sing and also, my bad on the performer intake, listen to 92RS on that one.

Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
i just got a set of headers from pacesetter and i couldnt be more dissappointed with a performance part. it took me five days to get the damn things in cause of all the manufacturing i had to do to the headers just to get em to fit my car. maybe their kits for the v-8's are better, but i would steer clear of em at all costs. i ignorantly brushed aside the warnings from all the people i talked to about em

Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
The headers from pacesetter do suck big monkey nuts, but the cat back is awesome. For headers I would go with the edelbrock TES, never heard of anyone having a problem with them. And as for the flowmaster american thunder 3, it is great, didn't say it wasn't. But I've had both that one and the pacesetter system and the pacesetter outperformed the flowmaster by 8hp. Granted it doesn't sound as good, doesn't sound bad at all, but not that flowmaster sound. It's all in personal taste.

Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
The 305 is essentially a smog engine, intended to clean the air. They run well, but power is another story. The cylinder heads are the big problem here. The combustion chambers are 1. too small, restricting valve sizes, hence breating, and 2. the combustion chambers restrict flame travel through the mixture, aggravating ping more than making power. A 350 would make the job easier, and will bolt right in. Ray

Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
actually, food for thought here, its not the chambers that restrict the valve size and airflow. its the bore. the 305 has a 3.765 inch bore (or something close to that) and it has to have small chambers and valves to make good compression and valve sizes. several people use the 305 heads on 350s because the small chambers make higher compression and can be ported out to 2.02 and 1.60 valves. also, its not normally the chambers that intturupt flame travel. its when people use a dome on the piston that sticks into the chamber that you get that senario.

Re: Looking for 305 Engine owners, Help needed!
Yeah them dome pistons where a bad choice. But the heads are pretty good. The small combustion chamber is also there to keep valves from hitting the cylinder walls due to the small bore. As far as flow goes, you can get the heads port and pollished to match any intake you could throw on it. The only problem I can forsee the 305 having is a small bore. Other than that it's a 350. It's got a long stroke and a small bore. Just do what I did, bore her 40 over and get a 400 crank and you have one less cube than the LS1.
