fan noise question?

I had my car taken in to be worked on, and the mechanic had the heater blowing at it's max setting while he was working (i guess it was too cold for him)

since i got the car back, my fan is making a noise when i turn the heater on. i know it's the fan, since i only hear it when it turns on or off, and you can hear the fan winding down as it slows.

what is causing the noise? could something be burnt out? is the fan easily accessible to where i could look at it? when i use the heater, i only use the first or second fan setting.... no need to put it at the fourth max setting.

the noise is noticeably louder when the fan is on the lowest setting... when it spins faster it decreases considerably.

any help at all would be great!

Re: fan noise question?

is it constant? or does it come and go regardless of fan position? If it's constant it sounds like it could be that your heater blower motor is on it's way out. As far as I know that is something that dosen't need any kind of oiling but I could be wrong. Anyone else have any ideas?

Does it sound like a screeching noise like it could be rubbing. Mine was working fine then all of a sudden it was rubbing and got real loud then
quit. The motor itsef is still working but the fan stopped spinning. Somehow the metal shaft of the blower stripped the plastic hole in the center of the wheel fan that the shaft goes into. I am going to go get some JB bond and see if that will hold it. If not, I either have to goto the junkyard or a dealer cause you cant get it at a parts store.
If your problem is the blower, It is not hard to replace depending on where it is. Mine is under the passenger side dash on the inside. Its a mercury Villager. It was pretty easy to get in and out. 3 bolts and plugs right in, and theres a rubber hose to vent the motor. Get the motor at your local parts store.
Hope this help, cause it sure is cold, here in Ohio atleast.
