Thumbs up 4age performance parts info

I recently acquired an 88 Corolla GT-S "FX-16" 1.6L and I would like to know if anybody has any info on performance parts for this engine. The engine has 150,000 miles, and has anybody ever rebiult one of these? I hear it's a monster to rebuild. Anyways, your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance to everyone who responds... I'll check this thread periodically.
Matt

Re: 4age performance parts info

My car came with a rebuilt 4AGE. The true question is What is your budget? I would recommend some mild cams, adjustable cam gears, 4-2-1 extractors into 2.25" piping and a cold air setup for a start. Then look at shaving the head, forged pistons, quad throttle bodies and an aftermarket ECU.

Re: 4age performance parts info

Kewl, thanks... but I tried to get it to pass California smog today and it failed , I gave it a full tune up and added some fuel conditioner but it hasn't moved in probably 4-5 years. The last time I drove it was over a year ago and it still ran great! It just sat for the last year or so. My budget will be smaller now that I have to smog this Bad Boy. But only time will tell... Thanks for the quick reply! Oh, where do I go for these performance parts? Online or other... Thanks again! Matt

Re: 4age performance parts info

Find a reputable workshop that can demonstrate some previous experience with 4AGEs. They should be able to source any components you need, or put you onto someone who can, as well as fit and tune them if neccesary.

I've heard about the smog issues in Cali - what kcik in the teeth for modified car enthusiasts.

Best of luck mate.

Re: 4age performance parts info

HEAPS of people should have worked on them! Very common engine to power up. I can suggest running standard exhaust/airbox for trips to the smog place Put a couple of cat converters on there too if ya can. What you do when you get home from passing the test, however, is up to you

Re: 4age performance parts info

Well, I changed the oil, put on a new cat and passed with flying colors, even after sitting for the past 6-7 years! I know the car was started a few times in that span, but after a good ol tune up and oil change, it runs like a champ! And, I'm legal!

Re: 4age performance parts info

Is it FWD or RWD? If it is FWD like mine, it is an AE82, if it is RWD, it is AE86.

Send me some pics:
[email protected]

It will probably be either an AE82 (like mine) or an AE92.

Re: 4age performance parts info

Had a good look at your pics - and am only taking an educated guess here. I think it's a version of the AE86 built for the US market only. We don't have anything like that here.
