2.4 Redline

Does anyone know the actual redline for the 2.4 tacoma engine? I looked in the owners manual and it was so strange because when it tells you that when you want to pass someone, the top speed for 1st gear is 30, 50 for 2nd, and 103 for fourth! (I forgot third) But that must rev that engine up really nasty, so i wanted to know the true redline for it.

I am guessing that you do not have a tachometer. So, when the fuel cut-off kicks in to limit the revs, shift up. The rev limiter will prevent any damage. It is set low enough to keep all the lawyers at toyota usa happy.
Make sure you have a high quality engine oil in place before you do too much of this.
I have a buddy at AOR that races his truck, it has a built 2.4. He runs it for hours on end above 6,000 rpm.
The toyota 4 cyl. motors are extremely reliable. I wish I could say the same for their efforts to add 2 or 4 cylinders.

Re: 2.4 Redline

My tacoma is a 98 2wd standard cab. And it is not because it is te base model it didn't come with a tach. SO is it just me or does it really have a high redline or does it just sound like it does. Because we have an 89 toyota 4wd pickup and it doesn't get near as narly as the tacoma does. And how hard would it be to do a tach swap?

Re: 2.4 Redline

I had a 98 2wd Tacoma, pretty much stock with factory tach and redline shows 5,500rpm, but the rev limiter/fuel cutoff kicks in at 6,ooorpm. In my truck mph/gear goes as follows. Theese are at rev limit/fuel cutoff. 1st-30mph, 2nd-61mph, 3rd-92mph, 4th depending on if your going uphill or downhill-103mph to 109mph, (factory speed limiter), bypassing the speed limiter, I have taken 4th between 115mph and 120mph, but didn't hit rev limiter due to continuos high rev 5,500rpm+ I wanted to shift anyway. Still holding it in 5th I'd say only went to 125mph to 128mph. Thought I'd held it long enough and was not gaining much more speed. The reason for the factory speed limit variance is when you hit the 103mph or so mark the computer sees it then take about a sencond or so to take action. So if your going up hill, your accelerating slower so you speed gain is not much, but going downhill, your accelerating much faster so when your computer sees the 103mph or so mark, your ables to still accelerate a little past it before it has taken action. To see what I talking about. Get your truck on ice (prefer big area so your not to hit dry pavement while tires are spinning real fast) then put it in 5th and floor it. You will see that 5th has taken it to rev limit 6k rpm and your speed is sitting on the peg. Keep holding it and after about 1-1/2 seconds your engine will act as it shuts off "fuel cutoff" and slow down back to about 60 mph before it re-engages. Have fun. Oh ya, the speed limit can be bypassed with 1 wire, very easy.
