It means the factory alarm is going to be engaged in I think 30 seconds or when you close the door.

I know a bit about it because whenever my aftermarket and factory alarm are out of synch (when aftermarket tries to lock doors before i close it ((-10 degrees outside, sensor thinks its closed)) but you cant use power locks while the door is open) in short, the factory alarm is a horn which isnt even that loud, and you have to turn the key in the door lock to turn it off. it used to happen but i know how not to make it go off now

Re: security light question

Its the theft alarm system if your car is equipped with it. If triggered the system provides both audible and visual alarm signals as well as disabling the car's starter circuit.

Re: security light question

how do you arm the factory alarm?
the remote control has a red button that just honks the horn.
how do i know that this car is equipped with it?
and more importantly, what does it do? as far as honking if someone enters without a key???

sorry for these questions, but i'm about to install an aftermarket alarm, and i need to know what i need to rewire or work with.

thanks

Re: security light question

It should be equipped with it if the light comes on. This is what you do to check. Roll down your window, lock the door with the remote, wait 1 min for the alarm to set, and try to open the door (unlock it from the inside, without the key). See if the alarm goes off.

The red button is a panic button, if someone is near your car or something.

The security should arm itself after a certain amount of time (1 min?) or when you use the remote to lock the door.

Don't know about the rewire.

Re: security light question

oh i was thinking aloud about the rewire.

i tested it and yeah it just blows that funny sounding horn.

not too bad to rewire it to work with an aftermarket.

joewagon,
why can't you use power locks while the door is open?

sorry again for all the questions, but the only cars i've ever installed alarms on didn't have factory alarms already.

Re: Re: security light question

i had my factory alarm blaring outside a starbucks for a while before i figured out that you have to unlock the drivers side with the key in the door. my factory alarm will arm itself if i hit the door lock button with the door open. the lock will set when i close my door [not when i hit the button, but when i close the door it will lock itself]. i have an aftermarket keyless entry/engine kill system that is tottaly independent from the factory. i just have to be carefull when i exit not to hit the door lock button, otherwise when i come back and unlock with my remote, the horn will go off and i have to close and use the key in the door to de-activate it.

basically i have the same problem as BoostedSpyder, but if you figure it out you can prevent it from happening.

I don't think I can lock my doors while they are open, for some reason. Maybe it's something else that causes the de-sych if my alarm arms while the doors are open, and that could not be true for you.

Another note is, with my setup if you open the doors, use the locks on the doors.. the factory will go off when you open the doors.

EDIT>> My installers recomended not touching the factory alarm. It is tied into a lot of systems (lights, horn, ignition) and would be a PITA to completely remove unless you knew what you were doing.

that must be what it is then, well anyway my problem was from a door sensor that is either too cold in the winter, or broken.
