I was driving my BMW 2000 528i on the freeway when my side impact airbags suddenly deployed.
Now, they are called "side impact" because it should be a life saving feature during a "side impact." This feature nearly killed me as I was doing 65mph on the freeway when I was struck unexpectedly by two airbags without any collision or impact at all! BMW sent field technicians to check out my car and found no signs of physical damage to the body of my car nor to the undercarriage. Now, this leaves my four tires vulnerable to blame. Surprisingly, BMW claims that my tires were the cause of the deployment. They claimed that I must have ran over something at high speed that the severe impact coming from my tires sent a signal to deploy the airbags. Ok, again, I didn't run over anything and I think side impact airbags are only to be deployed during a...hmm...what do you call those type of situations...oh, side impact!!! Readers, I've done my research. If you hear of the same things, please let me know. This is very dangerous and I was nearly killed. If you drive a 1997-1999 3 series, your car has the same problem. Your side impact airbags are overly sensitive. There is currently a recall for the components of the side impact airbags for 3 series. Please check with your dealer or the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Mine is a 5 series, according to BMW, this is the first time something like this ever happened. |
