Hey everyone,
My mom's pretty sick and she got to wondering...She told me that she's been going through tissues like they were nothing. Then she asked me the big question...Where does all the snot come from when you are sick??? I told her that I had no clue, but would try to find an answer for her. Any ideas??? Thanks for the help.

Re: All about snot!!!
But why does it run the most when you are sick? How come so much is produced at that time, stuff like that...

I dont know why it does all of that....my guess would be that when your sick you have a higher temperature than normal, so it causes the mucus to become more liquidy....and since you have more mucus than normal, your nose runs a lot. And so much is produced at that time because your immune system is busy fighting off the cold or whatever. I dont know the reason for this. If somebody here knows a good bit medical-wise, then please share.

Snot is mucus and is made by your mucus glands. Take a look at a coffee cup in your kitchen: that's how much snot your nose makes every day. Mucus does a lot of good stuff for something that's kind of gross. It keeps germs, dirt, pollen, and bacteria from getting into your lungs by stopping them in your nose. But sometimes mucus doesn't stay put. If you have a cold or the flu, your nose goes into mucus-making overdrive to keep the germ invaders out of your lungs and the rest of your body, where they might make you even sicker than you already are. Hairs in your airways called cilia also work to get bacteria and dirt out of your lungs and into your mucus. You know what happens then: the mucus runs down your throat, out your nose, or into a tissue when you blow your nose. Or it can run into your head - which is why you get that stuffy feeling. There are some things you can do to stop your nose running. Blow your nose! Blowing your nose helps keep it clear of mucus. Take a pill! Whether you're sick or have allergies, there are medicines you can take that will help stop the dripping. Taking a decongestant can help the lining of your nose shrink (if you've got a runny nose, it's probably swollen from all those germs). Antihistamines also dry up mucus.
Hope this helps, and I hope your mum is feeling ok now? |

Re: All about snot!!!
I'll try and find the article I recently read about mucous and colds, but you apprently only produce 2 teaspoons even when you have a cold, but like I said, there was na article in the paper somewhere I read that had a whole schpiel on it.

Suddenly, I am SO glad I drink my coffee from a can. There has been enough disturbing imagery on this site today, thank you.
