tranny noise in 5spd

ok, I have a 95 camaro 3.4 V6 5 spd, theres some tranny noise in first, second and third. Kinda like a grinding whining noise. Doesn't seem to have effected the performance of the car, just annoying. I've checked all fluid levels and had the tranny rebuilt last october. Planning on a major overhaul later this year but things are kinda dark now in terms of cash flow. If i change engines should I go with automatic? or stick with the manual? I know thats 2 questions but I'm still kinda new with the auto performance area.

personally, i'd take a stick over auto anyday. but the 700R4 is a good overdrive tranny is you treat it good. just compare how much it's gonna cost ya to have the 5spd fixed to the price of an auto. if i were you, i'd take the manual back to the person who "rebuilt" it.

Re: tranny noise in 5spd

does the noise occur when the clutch is engaged or disengaged?

the tranny thing is a toss up. if your just gonna be drivin around town and want the car to be fun, stick with the manual. if your goin for hard core, all out drag racin id go with the auto.

Re: tranny noise in 5spd

well took the car back to the shop that rebuilt the tranny, guess what..." no warranty on the workmanship of the parts we install" which means I gotta pay to have the thing checked out. BUT they ain't gonna do it. I'm taking it to a national tanny specialist this time. and the noise is there either way if the car is rolling, engaged or disengaged.

Re: tranny noise in 5spd

sounds like it could be a blown bearing. on the input shaft. thats why it does it all the time. but its weird that it does it when its disengaged. sounds like it might be a clutch problem instead of the trans. when was the last time you changed it?

Had the same problem with the 5 speed in my 97 chevy truck. It had a grinding, whining noise in 1st 2nd and 3rd but not in 4th or 5th. when setting at idle it would also make the noise. The input shaft bearing is bad. This is caused by the trans running a little bit low on fluid at one time or another. Mine was caused by fluid leaking out of a bad rear seal. I went through the trouble of changing out my clutch just hoping that that was the problem but it wasn't. If it has just started than I would recommend getting it fixed as soon as possible cause once the bearing is gone you take the chance of messing up more stuff in the trans which always mean more money. For my 97 the shops all had about the same price of $1000 and up if they changed just the bearing.
