Heat Blocker Air Filter

Can someone help me, I recently put an intake system on my 98 aurora, before knowing you could hollow out the old box, so I put a piece of sheet metal between the k an n filter and the fan, will that help with the heat wash or what ever it is called. Please help

The key is to isolate the filter(picture it with hood down of course)to where it can only draw cool air from the fender well holes.
