Question Help W/ Service Engine Soon

Two days ago I noticed my Service Engine Soon light was on, but I can't figure out what's wrong. I did notice that it was almost a quart low on oil. Could this be what was wrong??? If so, how do I make that light shut off? 1997 Silverado Z71 ExtCab w/ 144,000 miles

service engine soon

This may sound weird but on the 2000 Silverado, there was a loose leaf addendum to the owner's manual that said to reset the service engine illuminator, turn the ignition key to access, not run, just access and then depress the accelerator either three or five times. My manual is at home and I can't remember which it was but after doing that it should reset. The service engine light is a device that tells you when you reach a set number of miles you need to take your vehicle to a Chevy service center for about a week and then they'll bill you about $2000 to change your oil, and other fluids, belts and hoses. I passed on my service and did it myself for about $200 one Satyrday afternoon.

Well, I tried what you said about resetting the light, but it didn't work. If you find your manual let me know. Thanks anyway.

Re: Service Engine Soon Light

My light came on my 1998 Silverado. Took it to a Chevy Dealer...cost me $16.75 for a new gas-cap.Apparently the emisson control module sensed that the old cap was venting fumes (I guess?) & triggered the light.Hope this helps!

ses light

What you are talking about is resetting the oil chage reminder once you change your oil you turn the key to on not start just on and pump your gas pedal fast 3 times to the floor the light will blink and say oil reset. You can disconect the neg. post on your battery but you will lose any code stored in the pcm if you know it is something simple like a gas cap and don't want to pay to have it scaned disconecting the battery for 2 min will work

SES light is not the oil change light. That is your check engine light. When that light is on you have a trouble code in your onboard computer. Take the vehicle in and have the codes scanned to find out whats wrong.

Well, I had it tested and it turned out to be an O2 sensor on the right side. (Bank2Sensor2) Cost about $70.

Re: Help W/ Service Engine Soon

Just sold 97 Tahoe and the way I got the SES light to cut off was simply take neg wire off battery for about 20 min.
