Hey Happy New Year! I'm new!
Hi guys. I just recently bought an 86 Delta 88 Royal. I last owned a 87 Pontiac Bonneville but blew the engine cuz of big tranny problems. My parents only gave me 500bucks to spend, so i went out looking for a decent new car. I found this delta 88 in the paper and it said low miles so i called on it. I went to test drive it, and its been in a few accidents, but no biggy, it only has 71,000 MILES ON IT!! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! the tranny seems to be shifting hard when it down shifts. i think i just need to change the tranny filter and fluid, everything on this car is stock out of the factory, i don't even think the brake pads have been changed lol. some elderly couple had it to drive back and fourth to the mail box. now i have it. hopefully nothing bad happends to it. I would like to know of anything that goes wrong with the 86 delta 88's. Thanks, Jerrod

Hey happy new years !...
71K usually is tranny fix it time go to a good place that does tranny's so they dont give u the run around ..as for the car it's self mines the 92 and i'm passing the 159+k now with everything stock ..bascially if u take care of the car it'l last a really long time ..of course your gonna get problems down the road but thats a common thing among cars ......like with mine since it's high in mileage ..i'm starting to have to replace things here and ther just cause they "worn" out if ur in the US you go to a pep boys or autozone or whatever pickurself up a repair manual a chiltons or haynes ...it'l show you how to fix the minor stuff on the car basically almost everything ...also u said 71k ..and everything stock i guess you could also do a tune up change the plugs, wires , fuel filter , air filter , pcv valve , etc. i have actually saw spark plug wires actually "rott" from sitting so long chances are that ur car never saw a tune up in its day Do it safely Happy motoring! Happy New years ! |

I have owned 2 1988 delta 88 and an 89 delta 88 and all of them had bad motor mounts. my car thumps when its down shifting because the motor rocks... hold the brake and shift your car into reverse while someone looks at the motor. if it shakes violently then thats your problem. also the shifting module can cause shifting problems. your car should shift into overdrive at 50 MPH unless you are realy punching it. A mechanic will tell you that you have to replace the motor mounts but its bull. the motor mount rubber always gets screwed because its a terrible design.. the car has too much power. so just keep off the gas when accelerating and make smooth transitions when accelerating and you will be fine. the motor will not drop out of the car, the steel bolts are not going anywhere. But if you like the smoothness of fresh motor mounts go ahead and put some in.
tip of the day. check the oil when you buy a car. if it looks milky then you got water in the base...... bad,.... very bad. |

oh yeah. more about the milky looking oil. My friend has owned two of those 86/87 delta 88 and both of them had a gasket or somehting go in them. If you find that you do have that problem e-mail me at [email protected] and I will ask my friend what that was that he ended up changing.
