According to the technicians, the reason my service engine soon light is on is because I need an EGR valve and solenoid for my 1999 Ford Taurus. What excatly are these parts for, is it necessary to get them replaced ASAP, and what should they cost? Thank you for your help.

EGR, Hmmm
EGR, Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
At RPM over 1000 the EGR solenoid opens the EGR valve and allows the addition of exhaust to be directed into the intake to lower the NOX readings of the exhaust. That was the only way until 3 bed catalyst allowed most manufactures to stop installing them. Now the issue is not that they are bad, the check engine light is mileage rated to turn the light on. It could care less if it works, it is most likely a multible of 50,000 miles. I have no idea on price. Later,
