7.3 diesel mpg

I recently bought an '01 F250 4x4 w/ the 7.3 powerstroke diesel. I bought it mainly for fuel economy and towing power. I normally tow a 12' enclosed trailer w/tools (2500-4000# total) about 40-50 miles/day, mixed country and suburb driving. I'm averaging 12-13 mpg. I was told and was hoping for at least 15-17 mpg since I'm not working the truck hard at all. My driving style is easy to normal, nothing fast or aggressive. Any realistic advise or experiences on boosting this will be much appreciated. Also, I normally leave the overdrive on since the engine does not seem to be working at all and never shifts in and out of o.d. even when on hills, etc. Any harm in this, and will it affect my mileage?

Re: 7.3 diesel mpg

scb,

Your EBP (exhaust back pressure) sensor is probably plugged up or the tube going from the exhaust manifold to the sensor has a hole in it. The EBP sensor can be removed and cleaned with a small drill bit. The tube (you will see little black spots on it) obviously has to be replaced. The ECM has to read the right pressure or your mileage will be affected.

Re: 7.3 diesel mpg

Try running a couple tanks of power service through it, also change the fuel and air filter, and see if it helps anything.

Re: 7.3 diesel mpg

Hey SC, I used to have a 97 f-superduty 2wd service truck, with a jokestroke and a 5speed. It was a tough truck, but even with the aluminum service box, and one small toolbox on it, I was never able to get more than 10 mpg out of it. Did not matter how it was driven either. put your foot anywhere between idle, and the rad, and you got 10 mpg.
I eventually got rid of the truck after it went through 3 sets of injectors in the first 21,000 km. I am a heavy duty mechanic, and my truck was in the shop more than it was on the road. I gave up on ford, and went to dodge. Many happy miles (km) later, I'll stick with what works.
As a side note, on the ford, as with the dodge, I changed oil and all filters every 5,000 km ( 3000 miles ) and would change the air filter almost daily in extreme dust conditions. I found that it got the best ( hahah ) mileage with a clean air filter.

Good Luck on the quest, and remember.

The only way to get good fuel mileage is...... LIE!
