I have a 91 celica GT

Hi, im new to the forum and recently diverted my interests from computers to cars :-). I recently got a 91 celica GT but dont know much about cars, ive been doing some research of how engines work but im not sure of what i got on my hands. First off, what I know about my celica is that its a 16 valve engine (i looked under the hood) and that its a 2200, im asuming this means its a 2.2l engine, is this right?"And L is litre right?" How can i know more anout my engine? Ive read through the forums and seen you guys talking about like 5 different engines I wanna know what i got so that i can do research on it.I got many more questions but ill ask em later on to see if you guys can help me out on this. :-)

Re: I have a 91 celica GT

Hi, welcome to the forum. And you have to wait more than 3 hours to get a reply sometimes. Just chill, and some body will help you. Or you could use the "SEARCH" function or just read down a few posts. This was just discussed.

Anywho, you have the 5S-FE engine. Here is a link that another AF member posted with engine stats:

http://celica.henryvo.com/genengine.html

You are right about everything you wrote. You have a 2.2 liter, 4 cyl. 16 valve engine.

My first Celica was a 91 GT. Good car. Do you have the hatchback or the coupe?

Re: I have a 91 celica GT

qustion about the graph? 1990-91 (Celica GT and GT-S) why are they put together? STOCK they both provide the same amount of HP and stuff? Isnt a GT-S turbocharged? i dont get it? So a stock GT4 burns the crap outta a GT-S? not similar engines besides the 4wd?

Re: I have a 91 celica GT

wow..

okay... where do I start???

90-93 is fifth gen
94-98 is sixth gen

fifth gen offered ST, GT, GTS, Alltrac(gt4)
ST was trimmed down model
GT sportier, same engine as GTS (5S-FE 2.2L)
GTS same as GT, but with widebody
Alltrac turbocharged and intercooled, AWD

Sixth gens we got:
ST and GT .. There were GT-Four(alltrac) but we never got them in the U.S.

The GTS isn't turbocharged.

going back to the hatch question, I can't recall exactly, but basically, GT hatch/coupe, ST coupe/hatch?, GTS hatch, Alltrac hatch....

trying to answer in some order...

Yes the gt4 burns the crap out of a lotta stuff.
not similar engines. Only Alltrac got the 3S-GTE (turbo/awd) layout. All else is FWD, naturally aspirated, usually 2.2 L. 4th gens were 2.0 L . THere are also some 1.6 liter in the 6th gen.. whew..

hope this helps,

I'll get some links together for you and put them on my webpage sometime..

There are plenty of 'History of' pages out there, I'll see what I can do.

later,
CHris

Re: I have a 91 celica GT

Alltrac is also widebody in the U.S. and Canada.

Some parts of the world had GT-Four that weren't widebody, in the 5th gen.

Arg... trying not to confuse...

The GT-Four or Alltrac or Turbo4WD is all the same stuff, AWD, turbocharged and IC. From 87-89 the 4th gen (ST165) GT-Four was created. 90-93 were the 5th gen Celica, ST185.

After that the rest of the world received a 6th gen GT-Four. We never got them in the U.S. They would be the 4 headlight variety, just like the GT hatchback of 94-97(8?)

Later,
Chris

Re: I have a 91 celica GT

WoW! Thnx alot man for taking the time to answer my questions :-) Im now thinking of selling my 91 GT and buy a 6th gen celica, GT of course, and yes ive read tall the ups and downs about the 3sgte drop and the 5sfe but I think it would be easier for me to get my hands on a 94 GT than a 90-93 AllTrac plus im only 17 and its my first car :-) But just to get one clear straight? A 5sfe can get turbocharged right? I mean without changing the head, lost like a lower level turbocharger? Im not really up for that big of a HP increase i was leaning more towards the way of not so big mods like exhaust, intake, ya know.. that stuff :-) I dont wanna have a bad as* car just a very nice one that i can show my friends and make em say NiCE! and i dont want a ricer either, ya i know i talk to much ill hold my other questions for now :-D

what do u mean "4 wheel brakes"??? do you mean 4 wheel disk breaks? because i cant think of a celica that has only 2 brakes, but i kno some have drums... oh yeah and after what i just said... dont take ne thing seriously because illgt4 will probably prove me wrong or what not... the 5sfe engine can be turbocharged... they have been able to make 10 second street legal cars of course those have had the head swaped and many other things to strengthen the engine... most people wont recommend turboing the 5sfe without strengthening it somehow but i think if you keep it on very low boost it should be fine, dont quote me on that but it should hold... you should just look it up, or find someone that knows a lot about the 5sfe / 3sgte / 3sge engines... i kno there is a company making turbos for the 5sfe but it is $2500 and you only gain something like 45 hp so i wouldnt recommend that...

Re: I have a 91 celica GT

Agh ok i see. Ok so let say i get a 94 GT with 5sfe.. what add ons can i put on it to give it a little more torque and HP without going into the engine swap, head swap, and a turbo? Can i make it reach at least 200hp without those? And if i can what would they be?

Re: I have a 91 celica GT

very good ghetto, you are correct.

TheDroOgSter,
200HP would be a bit of a stretch. I can't recall the power output stock, but figure 30HP to be a good gain. But if you're trying and trying for HP increase, you may lose low end drivablilty. Which may make the car seem slower around town.

Why would you want to sell your GT for another GT??

I do agree with your wanting to take it slow and not go with the Alltrac. They make tough "only" cars. So if you didn't have something else for transportation, you may not have wheels when the mod bug strikes.. Alltrac's take well to power increases. But they can be hard on the wallet. Keep your GT, until maybe you get the hang of things, etc..

Take care,
CHris
