Lightbulb Running rough at idle and while driving???

Well, this car is giving me a headache and a half. I have replaced spark plugs, all vaccum hoses and O2 sensors. The car still running rough at idle and when at regular speed it feels like I'm running on six cylinders vice eight. Any ideas will be welcomed. Thanks

I didn't notice if your Aurora was a classic or newer model. I had a very bad miss at idle in my 98 and it turned out to be plug wires. I changed the coil packs before I did the wires. Several posts on the old Aurora site indicated bad coil packs were a common problem. I understand that on the newer model northstar engines the packs mount directly to the plugs so no ignition wires. Good luck.

Mine nearly drove me nuts until I changed the wires. It was like night and day. It ran like new after that. You might remove the plastic wire cover and observe the area in the dark with the engine running. You may see some arcing from a bad wire.

Re: Running rough at idle and while driving???

On my '95 it was the coil(s) and plug wires. Remember, if one coil is bad, 2 cylinders don't fire.

Also, clean the throttle body and plate on both sides of the throttle plate.

2 months after changing plugs and wires to fix my misfire, I had a chunk of carbon foul a plug. Like binky, I've come to the conclusion that some periodic carbon removal from the throttle body is a good thing. I ran a good fuel system cleaner too (BG 44K).

Re: Running rough at idle and while driving???

Even with these injected high-tech engines, good old Marvel Mystery Oil can't be beat for top end cleaning and breaking excess carbon loose. Use 91 octane or better and a 20oz Chevron Techron Concentrate every 2 months, along with the A/C Delco plugs and wires as discussed in the "Valuable Northstar" thread. A plug wire could foul only under load without you even feeling it. Over time, this can fry the coil. I suspect this is what has been causing the bad coil problem in these cars. Modern coil packs should last the life of the engine.
