MR2 TURBO(my brother) vs DSM AWD TURBO(me)
I drive a civic but, I was thinking about buying this DSM. It's a '91 six bolt awd turbo. Anyway, I was test driving it with the owner while my brother was sitting back where the car was parked in his MR2 (that we rode up there in). When we were coming back when owner asked me if he thought my brother would give us a run. My brother's MR2 is a '93, so it has the LSD and some other small advantages over the '92 MR2. Anyway, my brother agreed and we found a nice dead back road. We went on a three count. My brother dropped it at around 3500 and bogged a bit, but not a totally horrible launch. While we got a good launch and the awd puts up about 2-3 car lengths in first gear. My brother creeps up in second and gains and passes up by the shift into 4th. We shut it down at about 70-80 and he was far enough in front of us that he passed us and had a couple car lengths between us. It was a fun race.

It was a Talon TSi, sorry I forgot to say that. Anyway, it was stock vs. stock.
My brother has a TKO 3" down pipe and exhaust on the way. I know that you probably don't believe this but you can ask anyone on a well known MR2 website and they will post a dyno chart, but with just those two mods there is an average of 15-20rwhp and about 30ftlbs of torque. All for about 700-800 buck... and it looks real nice too ![]() He's going to do more, but he's not in a rush to dump all his money into it. It's a really nice car, it only has 68-69k original miles and it's in mint condition. He said the next mods are going to be a boost controller and he's going to drop the stock ct26 turbo for little bigger JDM MR2 stock turbo. We also did a 30mph rolling shot, but my brother blew it really nice by missing a shift and then throwing it into 5th instead of 3rd, Hehe.

Re: MR2 TURBO(my brother) vs DSM AWD TURBO(me)
YEA DSM ARE FAST AS HELL , give that tsi a 3' turbo back exhasut and intake and raise the boost up to 16psi and see who wins.. dsm tear ass with little mods. i know a lot of people that spen 5g's into their dsm and are doing mid to low 12's and some hi 11's..

Yeah, they are easily upgradable... as are the MKIIs. With minimal mods 12s are very obtainable. I would rather an MKII, but I don't have the cash... although I doubt that i will have either, because I'm married and it's just better having the room that my civic offers. I'll probably boost the civic, but for now I just want to get settled down in my new house and all.

dont classify all DSM's as being 'fast as hell.' i can sit here and rock out a big ass list of slow, unreliable dsm's. sure guys can put in $5g worth of mods but how long do they last??? tranny's in those cars (especially in the 2gen's) are good for about 100000 miles. i have 3 friends who have had their 90,000 mile tranny handed to them in a ziplock bag (1995 eclipse gsx, 1997 eclipse gs, and 1995 avenger (a/t)). saying all dsm cars are fast with little mods is like saying all chicks are really hot. what about the eclipse/talon gs/rs. those cars are dogs...ill go into more detail as soon as you refute this with whatever points you bring up. i dont have the motivation or desire right now. although im a honda enthusiast, i wont hesitate to tear down dsm bullcrap all day long...especially in a honda/acura forum.

I think that the main unreliability issue among DSMs is crankwalk, common among the 7 bolt engines. I'm also wondering why you would be more inclined to bash DSMs on a honda/acura board. That kind of makes honda owners look like a bunch of punk kids who think that their cars are better than everyone elses.

Re: Re: Re: Re: MR2 TURBO(my brother) vs DSM AWD TURBO(me)
Dodge/Chrystler/Jeep/Eagle/Plymouth are all in the same boat. Ever sit in an Avenger? Their interiors are almost the exact same as 2G Eclipses. I had a '94 Talon and the auto tranny went kaput after 75k miles, along with the engine too.. I'm not here to put people's cars down, but in my experience DSM's are very unreliable. They can be fast with a minimal amount of mods though, I can't argue that.

Re: MR2 TURBO(my brother) vs DSM AWD TURBO(me)
I hate to break it to you but the CT20 is NOT bigger than the CT26 that he currently has. The JDM MR2 has more boost from the factory which explains the horsepower difference. Also, because the turbo is smaller, it spools faster. There are upgrades available for the CT26 and it will be cheaper to modify that turbo than to get the CT20 and he would have more HP potential. If you have any other questions about that, feel free to message me.

Re: Re: Re: MR2 TURBO(my brother) vs DSM AWD TURBO(me)
yea ok i agree that not all dsm are fast. and i guess my def is different from yours of what a dsm is i ment gsx/gst, tsi, and the 4g63 powered lases as dsm. and yes they can CAN be unreailable but overall they are fast cars..

Re: MR2 TURBO(my brother) vs DSM AWD TURBO(me)
The number in the code of turbos used by Toyota denote the size. The MK4 Supra uses twin CT12 turbos. The MK3 Supra also uses a version of the CT26 btw. It has an upgraded compressor wheel and a slightly larger housing....makes 232hp in the Supra at 7psi. Think about that for a second.
