Starts then dies??

My 99 has displayed a problem twice in the past 2 months. It will start but immediately die. The fuel pump is whirring away and it appears to be getting fuel, spark, etc. First time it happened after more than a dozen attempts to start it, I moved on to another vehicle and left it sit in the driveway. Came back later and it started up and ran with no problem. At that point I took it to the dealer and had them change the fuel filters and clean the intake system and injectors.

Yesterday it happened again and I tried cleaning the MAF sensor myself and that did nothing. I have now changed the MAF sensor out and the problem still exists. Starts, runs 1 to 2 seconds and dies.

Anyone out there with experience like this?

Try looking at the battery, or alternator. Low voltage can really screw with the computer. A simple test would be to hook up a battery charger and then run it.

John,
thanks for the the tip and reply. I did a check on the voltage already. It was fine which was no surprise since it has an Optima battery and a new alternator. Btw, it does start but then dies.

I am now beginning to believe it may be the fuel pump going bad or fuel pressure regulator.

Has the Theft Deterant light come on when this happens?
A start and stall condition can be caused by the theft system sensing an event and disabling fuel enable..
Also it would be a good idea to check the fuel pressure to see if you are suffering from low pressure or a loss of fuel pressure on start-up.

Bingo Merlin - you hit the nail on the head.

I gave up and towed the vehicle to the local dealer and they called me this morning and told me it was the theft deterrent module!

Thanks for the reply.
