The reason your air conditioner clears the windows is because water is removed form the air when it passes through the air conditioner unit, thus there is no vapor in the air to condense and fog up on your windows. So air conditioning is the best way (I know) to clear windows, and you should know that it will work with the heat on- hot air conditioning sounds a little strange but it clears the windows fine. Hope you figure it out..

Be sure your ventilation system is not in the Recycle mode. This is guaranteed to have the windows fogged up in short order in the winter time. Moisture from your breath accumulates until the glass temperature is below the dewpoint of the air and - presto - condensation. For what it's worth, my E30 almost required that I run the A/C in winter to deal with your problem. Fortunately, my E39 seems to breathe much better.

Re: windows misting up on 320i 1996 auto
Check antifreeze level, any leaks under the car (windshield area).it is possible you have a leaky heater core which might cause the misting windows. I just replaced mine on 325i ’92.
