paint removal with plastic, putty, AND resin?

I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for on this. I'm sure some of you can help me.

now I know to strip paint with CSC or brake fluid. cool, but thats on a basic plastic car model body.

lets say I add a SAS resin kit to the model, and also I use putty to shave doors and make fenders more flared. Now, instead of just having a plastic model to soak, I also have a resin bodykit and putty all over the model. can I still soak the model or will it ruin the resin and putty? do I have to go about removing the paint in another manner? if so what do you suggest? thanks for the help!!

CSC will react differently to various putties and may or may not remove it. However I do know never no NEVER EVER put resin in CSC unless you want to go buy a new one. CSC will absolutely destroy resin parts.
Instead I recommend the brake fluid method.

Good Question!!!!!

Re: paint removal with plastic, putty, AND resin?

thanks dag!!

so no CSC for modified models with resin parts.

I figure besides the plastic model body, there is still other parts left to melt on many of my models like:

-resin bodykit
-putty
-styrene
-the glue holding it all together

if I build a model containing all of these things how can I strip the paint if I do a poor job???

this is why my S15 silvia had a sub-par paintjob.. because I thought it was a one shot deal, mess the paint and goodbye to a very expensive and time consuming project.

I really hope I can get some more of everyones thoughts on this.

By far the best paint stripper that i have ever used is Easy Lift Off made by a company called Poly S, its not harsh on plastic, im still yet to loose a kit over it, it only took me half an hour to completely strip my GT4 back to bare plastic. only draw back is that its nasty on the lungs and fingers make sure you wear gloves and a respirator.

OK dag65, theres your first post, which I appreciate

I just want to know will brake fluid method possibly eat away at the resin, styrene, putty, or even the model glue holding it all together??

am I 110% safe here? is this a guess? have you tried it?

no guesswork on this next model. I want to give it everything I've got.

I have used brake fluid and it works well, to my knowledge it won't bother anything. However all putties are different. Easy Off oven cleaner works well also.
Heres a suggestion, take some of your putty and make a ball and let it dry. Put it in whateve stripper you are using and see what happens, then you know for sure and nothing gets harmed
Glues may become brittle but thats the chance you take.
Good luck

Re: Re: paint removal with plastic, putty, AND resin?

Brake fluid works fine for stripping resin...well...at least the resin used in my t/kits. I had heard previously that it will dissolve resin but that was proved wrong the first time i stripped one of my kits. I have not stripped any other resin so couldn't possibly give a well informed comment but i can't imagine there will be any problems.

You may also find that you will need to redo all your putty work as the brake fluid will often effect that.

Further to FOTW's post, I have put a Renaissance resin transkit in brake fluid before and it did not have any adverse affect on it. The brake fluid I used was some cheap Dot 4 stuff.
