Re: buying a baby
I would say get the 98 TA, the LS1 engine kicks ass, and the 13.9 that motor trend ran in it is weak, It should be around 13.5. And are easy to get in the 12's with basic mods. but if you only have 8K to spend, it would be kinda hard to find one in good shape, with low miles.
the LT1 in the 95 hawk is still a good engine, but it would take some good mods to run with a stock LS1 car. it usually takes full exhaust, and CAI to run with an LS1. And if you find an original 90 Firehawk for 8K, you better buy it and store it. the third gen Firehawks are very few in number, and are collectors items. So to sum it all up, if you find a good 98 Trans Am, get it. But if you cant find one, get a 93-97 Trans Am/Firehawk/Z28 with an LT1. |

Re: buying a baby
It would be very interesting to find a 1990 Firehawk period, since I've not heard of one...
http://www.firehawkowners.com/list.html?YEAR=1991 http://www.firehawk.org/list.html?ID=1024 Hell, even to find another of the 3rd Gen Firehawks would be a feat, much less to find someone selling them (in 92 there were 27 ordered, and 25 produced, number 18 and 23 were cancelled). Personally, I'd go for the 95 Firehawk, for it's nice looks and small production number, or an LS1 powered F-body (98 or newer).

Re: buying a baby
i would go with a B4C third gen camaro, i have seen them go for as little as 5000 leaving you 3000 for mods. making them even faster. look on EBAY for the 1990 to 1992 camaros, and look for G92 camaros (showroom stock racing, very close to the 1LE but not quite) and the B4C police package camaros, these are heavy duty, high performance cars, that with a little attention can be real street killers, and right now, third gens are dirt cheap. bought my IROC for 2300 bucks. shes a little worse for wear, but hey, i bought it in arkansas

Re: Re: buying a baby
I agree find a B4C car but in a 4gen. The came with a stock 52 mm throttle body, large sway bars, high flow exhaust (I drove one they are fast)... But if you want a car that will be a collector buy a 95 Firehawk. They made so few of them in 95 and 96 or you can look for the ultra rare 97 LT4 Firehawks way cool. Oh and they didn't make a 90 Firehawk 91 was the first year for it. And good luck finding one cheap because when they were new they went for $50K.

i guess i'm just a 3rd gen man myself. score a 3rd gen pretty cheap, spend couple thousand to easily stomp a 4th gen, and still have enough money for a case a beer

Now all of those choices are great ones...IMO ...I like F-Body's progressively more, chronologically... i.e. third gen's, then LT1's, then LS1's. With with that progressive 'cool factor', the price goes up. Unless it's beat. But I think the most logical thing to do is get one and mod it. And modding a third gen would get you about as fast as a LS1, even faster if your going nuts with it. But personally...I'd snag a 96-97 Formula (because everyone that I have talked to said it's got a lot of less features...in my brain...less weight. So it would HAVE to be quicker than a Trans Am, same engine, trans...less weight.) But I don't feel ike bickering with anyone about it. Then go ahead and mod that. And also, Formula's are cheper than Trans Ams, and WAAAAY cheaper than Firehawks. But that's my

i would go for the 94-96 range in trans am or camaro
the lt1 can be highly tuned and modified with ram air induction you can find these cars in your price range, shop around, and make sure you look the car over very good, one time I found a HELL OF A DEAL. a man had a 99 super sport camaro for 4,500 350 ls1 6 spd. tranny. i was ready to buy. then i found out it was a restored wreck. the front end would pop when you rounded a curve. it handled good going cruise speeds but when i started testing her power the suspension went crazy. i passed her up. i know the guy who did buy it. it did need some suspension work BUT, she handles like new and the poping sound was a bad strut. he spent 1,500 more fixing the susp. So im still kicking myself in the @ss. I currently own a 90 rallysport camaro w 5.0 liter tpi and 5 spd trans. about 245 hp. stock then i have a 87 trans am GTA sporting a 383 tuned port stroker, its a beast, i eat the hell out of a 2002 camaro ss with it i have run hooker headers 3 1/2 inch exhaust and glass packs. you can hear her from a mile away. after all the computer mods i had to do to the tpi system, port polishing and getting all engine components forged a so i could run a nitrous system i have over 10 thousand in the motor. and the thing i like best its gloss black, everything is blacked out windows 5 % you cant see in it the interior is like in the knight rider car with all digital guages, tv moniters, except mine has black leather seats. i takes alot of time and plenty of money it took me 3 years to turn it from a junk yard dog to a street prowling beast, there is no car in the area where i live that can catch it. what i have invested in fixing it up i could have bought a 2002 firehawk. t/a so think about it and make sure its what you really want. |
