I am planning to put a 6" Fabtech lift on my 3.4L Tacoma with an auto tranny. Do I need to change out the gears? I only drive on the highway, so I am not too concerned about power loss, but I am concerned about any unnecessary wear and tear. Can I keep the stock gears?

Re: Lift kit and gearing
Depends on if you are going with 33's or 35's. With 33's, it's going to suck, but possible. With 35's you'll be killing your motor just to get up to speed. This is all if your truck came with 4.10 gears. If you have 3.91, you'd prolly have to regear for either tire size.

I talked with my Toyota dealer today and he said my truck should have 4.30 gears and would be okay with 35's.

I am running 35x12.50 tires with a total lift of 9 inches on my 2002 4cyl Taco with the automatic tranny. The trucks still has great performance. I know it sounds unbeleivable but i am not putting you on. I have absolutely no complaints about my acceleration or highway power. However, with these tires in the 4cyl overdrive becomes useless. I never use it because the truck will shift in and out of it too much if it is on. As a matter of fact i am so happy with the performance with the stock gears that my next tires will be 36" Hope i could help out.
