Painted my cousin's civic *serious dial up warning*

Got his civic painted friday so I thought I'd post pics
This is what it looked like the day we brought it home

started playing with the engine bay a bit

then came straightening the frame, wheels, new bumper, and fenders

while the men are doing the body work, we have the women working on the interior

new hood

interior in

then my cousin decided to change things around and go yellow instead of blue with the engine, here's a pic with the new core support, bumper, and fenders

then came the squirels that chew threw the hood :kickermad:

the holes will be filled with clear lexan glass (for show) and it won't look so crappy when we're done

Got the civic all straightened out and driveable

needs a new trunk

115 mph pic

got a new trunk lid, shaved the side moldings, molded the door handles, and primered it

ended up needing a new tranny so we pulled the hole motor

might as well paint some shit while it's out

drop it back in

and this is how it sits now, waiting for a kit which will put it in the shop for some headlight or taillight tricks and then paint

and currently working on a screen with a PS2

midnight and the black is done

black is dry

time to start laying out the flames

then comes the longest part, masking the flames. Two of us, it took 4 hours to do, blah.....

5am, flames are masked, time to spray

hit the front bumper while we're at it

6:30am, time for bed
8am, strip the tape

Then it's time for clearcoat

And then we went back this evening to get it, put enough junk on it to make it legal (lights, wipers, etc...)

2000 civic taillights

hard to see in this pic, but we molded the license plate frame

Immediate plans: get rid of everything yellow, inside and out. Everything is going to be black and blue.

and to all the haters

And yes I know, the car is probably considered rice for many reasons. He was going to do the car black and have the front end be white and then fade into blue/yellow/white flames but we kinda changed our minds half way through. So now all of the yellow will be taken off the car, and everything will be done in blue/black. The holes in the hood will be filled with plexiglass as soon as the car is completely done.
Sorry for so many pics.

Re: Painted my cousin's civic *serious dial up warning*

good lord man you are a damn miracle worker!! what was that a theft recovery when you first got it? it looked pretty rough I can hardly believe you beat it into the shape it is in now. I dunno about the taillights... I don't care for those a whole lot but honestly I can't see stock ones on there at all... I dunno I think maybe for a show car I would go with all clear ones or something... and the flames! that is awesome man I love that they are so well layed out. i agree with losing the yellow I think it will look really slick all black and blue like you guys are going to do, btw did I mention how much I like that blue color? how do you plan to attach the lexan/plexi glass in the hood? as a show car i think it is off to a damn good start as far as the body goes! good work!

sorry for the rather random arrangement of comments I just kind of started typing and kept looking back at the pictures, you know...

Hood have a top and bottom of it, so when you cut a hole in it you have about an 1/8 inch gap between the two. We're gonna cut the plexi a little big so it will slide in between the top and bottom layer, and then some glue to hold it in.
The car isn't going into big car shows, just local show 'n shines and stuff to advertise locally.

Holy Shit dude!!!! that so freakin awesome! How long was the total rebuild? that is a perfect example of getting a junkyard special and making it into a beautiful machine again. major props man. I hope you win lots of shows with it. and btw, in my opinion, that car, after what it started as, and ended up as, is far far far from being rice.

Well it was one of those cars that we worked on when we got time, so it took a little over a year I believe. We could have done it in less than a month if we actually worked on it every day. We did the taillight conversion, installed the body kit, and painted it all in two days.

Well Kicker, considering it was a mess when you got it, you did a nice job cleaning it up. The black and blue color scheme is nice looking, and you did a good job on the flame. Too bad you changed color schemes along the way, now you have to redo a bunch of crap, but I am sure you'll hammer it out. I have a few points of contention though, where I would have gone a different route. First, if I was going to spend the time and effort to pull off a taillight conversion, I would not have converted 5th gen tails to 6th gen tails. In my personal opinion, they look way to close toghter, it's just not worth the effort. Since all that work will throw you into a higher catagory anyway, I would have molded in something completely different. I was always a fan of R34 tailight conversions. That would have looked real nice with the color layout. Supra or S2000 tails would have worked too, but an R34 tail conversion would have been my choice if I was going to do all that work. Second, I would have continued the flame scheme down onto the bumper, black with blue flames. Yes, it would have taken a lot more time, but IMO the results would have been worth it. Still, don't think I am belittling you with my comments, you did a good job turning that wreck of a car around. Nice work there.

I completely agree with you, but it's my cousins car and his choice of how to mod it. I made a few suggestions, some he took, some he didn't.

Yea, you can't make someone mod a car a certain way. You did nice work on the car, the flames look nice and the body is straight to name just a few things. I mean, it looked like hell when you got it. I just thought, it's sad. You do all that hard work to do a taillight conversion right, and only the die-hards will notice. That, and doing flames on the bumper would have REALLY showcased your custom painting skills at a show. I disagree with some of his mods, not your work though. You did a really nice job on the work.

Re: Painted my cousin's civic *serious dial up warning*

problem with plexiglass is it will fog up or craze after exposure to the elements. Mineral glass is better, but more fagile and heavier. A good quality mesh like I have on my hood would allow the engine to breather better, be lighter, and still allow some degree of visual exposure to the engine..

He did most of the work, I just helped. He knows so much more than I do.

You're right. It's actually not plexiglass that he's gonna use, it's a thicker material, forgot what it's called, possibly lexan, dunno though. I was watching F&F2 yesterday and at the end they have a computer animated race and the supra had mesh in the hood that looked really good, I'd rather see something like that go in there.
