Knocking when steering...

I'm hearing a knocking sound somewhere on the vehicle whenever I'm making a left or right turn past a certain degree. I have tried to pinpoint the place where I am hearing it from, but I can't really tell. It sounds like it is coming either from the steering itself, or something in the suspension. Any ideas?

Re: Knocking when steering...

Could be coming from many things - worn suspension bushings, worn parts, broken parts, etc. It's hard to pin-point 1 thing without seeing/hearing it since there are so many things that can go wrong.

Most likely its coming from the inner/outer tie rod, upper/lower ball joint i would guess.

Re: Knocking when steering...

Yeah, CV joints making noise while turning is very typical.

If they're going, most likely the rubber boots around the CV joints have cracked, and you should be able to see this when you look under the car. They are at the ends of the axles which go into the transmission (transaxle i guess) and the wheel hubs. Its typical that as cars get as old as ours, the rubber cracks, which lets out the grease and lets in the crud. The CV joints inside will inevitably fail once that happens.

Fortunately replacement axles with new cv joints are relatively cheap.

yup, cv joints are prolly gone and ripped. Check to see of your boots are ripped, if so, replace both your axles. They are like 60 bucks each at autozone.
