1993 5.0 problem

I need to ask y'all about how to unlock an ignition on a 1993 Mustang 5.0. My girlfriend is trying to troubleshoot this problem for her granddad, who is too elderly to fix it. When the key is in the ignition, it will not turn, and the steering wheel is locked.

She's attempted to take the ground cable off of the battery, checked for blown fuses, and hasn't found the problem yet. Any suggestions you can give me would be appreciated, cause I've got no idea how to help her. Doesn't help that she's an hour and a half away...

Thanks fellas.

Yeah, that didn't help her at all. I'm fresh out of ideas, this just happened out of the blue...

Try turning the wheel counter clockwise and hold it there why you try to turn the key. If the wheel is locked this puts strain on the key lock.

Yeah, it does take some effort to release the wheel after it has been locked.

Okay, I'll tell her to try this, and then try it myself when I'm out there again next. I'll see if I can help her troubleshoot it then as well, and then post what I find out afterwards...

i have the opposite problem in my notch... ignition switch will turn with no key at all, occasionally... it's simply worn out. go to the ford dealer, give them the VIN number, and they'll press you a new set of keys. i'd say, 80% chance it'll turn right away. otherwise, thing about replacing the switch ($50, about an hour's work)
