99 Jetta TDI
I have a 99 Jetta TDI. It was a very tight but starting about 12 months ago it has developed a noise that seems to emanate from underneath the car and to me sounded like either a broken eshaust hanger or some failed suspension bushings. The noise is sort of a small clunking sound (doesn't sound like metal clanking on metal) that is assoiated with road bumps. It doesn't take large bumps to make it happen. Sometimes not more than a crack in the road will cause a surprizingly noticeable sound. The sound is noticeable enough that anyone who is attuned to the sounds a car makes would wonder what is going on under there.
My wife took the car to the local VW Dealer. They couldn't find anything and suggested it was the snow shovel in the trunk that was rattling around. It took about 5 seconds to prove that wasn't the case, but I still don't have any solution.
Has anyone had a similar problem? If so what was it and what did it cost to get it fixed?
