Question 95 camry 2.2L Hissing when driving hard

I can't recall when it started happening, but only when I'm in gear, I get a hissing noise when accelerating HARD. The hissing starts at about 2200rpm and increases in pitch up until about 3400rpm. Then I can't hear it anymore.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I've asked a few mechanics and they've never heard it before. I checked my valves on the intake manifold where it also connects with the EGR valves. They all seem to be in place. I'm thinking it involves intake but not quite sure because when the car IS NOT in gear, I don't get the hissing noise when I rev engine.

Someone did suggest that it could be a trannie issue.

I really don't know where to begin with this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 95 camry 2.2L Hissing when driving hard

Think I might have the same problem in my 96 cam.

Local shop thinks it is a flywheel prob, I'm not sure. It is inconsistent, I notice it most accellerating up or down a hill. Sounds like high speed metal on metal high pitched grinding.

Try this . . .
engine on,
trany in reverse,
step on the brake hard
step on the accellerator

When I do this I can consistently reproduce the grind.

Does this work for you?

I am thinking the flywheel (driveplate or other name?) or maybe an engine (trany) mount.

Please let me know what you find. The local shop doesn'te seem to interested in figuring this out. No estimate on labor or problem. might be $500, $1000, more?

Thinking about taking to a dealer, but I try to avoid that ($$$$$) and I haven't had much luck, they try to sell me a new car by over estimating the prob..

If you mean it is a whining noise that increases in frequency with engine rpms, my '96 has done this since the day I owned it and has never changed. I think it is the timing belt or the alternator. Gone 50k without problem. If it is a whine, don't worry about it. Just give it some cheese once in a while to keep it happy.

I think you and paranormal have two totally different problems.

Every 4 cyl (5S-FE) Camry I have driven, has the same noise.

More than likely, the noise is caused by the scissor gears that synchronize the two cam shafts. Also forgot to mention, the twin balance shaft pack is gear driven (gear off the crank), and this also contributes to the noise.

Please see the cam gears below.

Re: 95 camry 2.2L

You might be right. However, I was taught that helical gears don't make noise, only spur gears. I may be mistaken on this....

Re: Re: 95 camry 2.2L

Hello Brian,

I would say helical gears make a lot less noise than the whine/grr,grr,grr sound straight/spur gears especially at lower RPM's, but might make some noise (hissing noise) at higher RPM's. Aren't the balance shafts spinning at 2x engine RPM's?

Wish I could diagnose the exact cause, but for sure, it is a characteristic of every 5S-FE I have driven.

Now, if I could just diagnose the damn tapping noise my 03 Camry SE, 2AZ-FE makes at warm idle, and clatter at 1100-1400 RPM's:

Of course the dealer says normal... yeah right!!!

Re: 95 camry 2.2L

Yeah, might have something to do with the balance shafts. I assumed that since it was so loud, whatever was causing the noise had to be external to the block.

Re: 95 camry 2.2L

NOw there are many noseies that yu guyus hab talked about. one of the slight wizzing noises on the older Camry i am thought to belive is the Torque Converter, service yur tranny dude. The torque aids the tranny oil pump in gettin the fluid around at idle , especially when at idle and yur trans filter screen id dirty its hard 2 suck the oil n from the pan at low engine speeds, causing the hum or whine at low engine rpm.the gears i n the cylinder head are actually quiet unload as to the exhaust cam spinning of the intake viat the gear. The exhaust cam if yu look has a small lock spring inside that loada the same attached gear 2 keep it noisless.
