I was out with the Columbus crowd tonight, and this guy has a brand new Garret turbo (just the snail, no manifold or anything) he's selling for $150. He bought it for $400 but his engine died before he could install it. That sounds like a great deal to me. I want to buy this but my quesitons are, first of all, would it even be a good idea? I want to run about 4psi on stock compression on my B16B. How much hp will that add, and what parts would I need besides a turbo mani and piping? Would I need larger injectors for only 4psi? Anything needed to "fool" the ecu (like a missing link on a sohc)? I'm sure my engine could withstand 4psi, but if I'll only see 20-30 hp out of it and will need $500+ in parts JUST to get it running right (no optional mods yet like an intercooler/boost controller/bov), I may have to hold off a bit. Any suggestions/opinions/thoughts?

Well, in general, they say that 1psi=10hp. I am not sure how that works with such low boost though. Still, the B16B runs a 10.6:1 c/r, so I wouldn't wanna boost that. A missing link, or somethig similer, is a good idea, to say the least. It will help "trick" the map sensor. There are other routes, but you're trying to keep the cost down, since it's only 4psi. There are cheap boost controllors you can get if you want...turbo XS has some affordable "manual" boost controllers. Maybe like $79 or so. You'll need a BOV for any turbo system, so chaulk that cost up. Nothing fancy though. You can probably get a used DSM BOV fairly cheap that would work fine. Also, I would think that you'd need a slight injector upgrade. I'd do it just to be safe, as you don't wanna go blow your type-r. Even on low boost, given the very high c/r of a type-r motor, I would definatly get an intercooler. Hotter temps can cause pre-detonation, as can a high c/r mixed with boost. Mixing both of those is not a great idea. If you wanna try and boost that motor, get an intercooler. It will add more power, plus help reduce the chances of pre-detonation due to the hot air temps a turbo creates. You get a 1% gain in HP for every 11.1 degree's you lowe the intake temp, and some intercoolers can knock upwards of 100 degree off the air temp. If it were my type-r motor, I wouldn't do it. Type-R motor's are for n/a apps. A high compression ratio and boost usually isn't a good idea. Though I have seen in pulled off successfully twice. Both times, though, the car really wasn't raced at all, plus the guy's knew a hell of a lot about tuning. So it's a different case with them, that's not a combo most people want to run. If it was me, I'd pass on it...but that's me. I hope this helps a bit.

Re: High-compression & turbo
Thanks man. Oh well, maybe I can get my friend to buy it for his LS Integra, I'm sure he'd have more fun w/it than me. Since I'd have to buy all the turbo neccessities any other car would need, there's no way I'm going to spend that much for such a low output. Guess I'll have to keep saving for the Spoon 1.8 stroker kit instead.

Re: Re: Re: High-compression & turbo
yeah, been a lot of them lately..
How much power with the stroker add? I'm not too sure about the numbers except it will raise displacement to 1.8, surely adding some torque... |

that spoon stroker kit looks like a pretty good deal. Does anyone know if it would work on a B16A3????
