Question 95 grand am low oil pressure

Recently purchased a 95 Grand Am 6 cyl GT. The oil pressure light was on and there was an oil leak. The oil gauge needle is just above the red line at idle and about 20-30 psi when driving. The mechanic replaced a cracked oil pan, new oil pump, new oil level switch and oil pressure switch. He tested the pressure at idle at 5 psi, at 1100 rpm at 12 psi (recommended is 15 psi) and at cruise at 30 psi. The oil pressure light remains on and the gauge is giving the same readings. Occasionally after a restart, the light won't come on unless you are idling at a light. Checked with the previous owner and he claims the head gasket, bearings and oil pump were recently replaced. Any suggestions for the minimum oil pressure and the light?

Re: 95 grand am low oil pressure

I had the same problem with my 95. Sometimes it runs at 40 psi. and at idle, bearly at 10 psi...Ive been told that as they get high mileage there is sludge build up in oil passages causing the erratic pressure readings. I solved my Problem by doing a motor flush....its cheap and worth a try

Re: 95 grand am low oil pressure

if you have the 3.0 or 3.3 engine the norm oil press at idle is 19 psi Minimum and at 2000 Rpm it is 36 min.

Re: 95 grand am low oil pressure

The oil light is a commen problem with the Instemant clusters (mine does it as well) There is a TSB (tech Service bulliton) about it Stating that there is a loose connection in the Cluster and should be sent to GM I dont know the address but I could find out if anyone wants to know.
