noise when accelerating

Hi
I have a 2000 Grand AM SE, when accellerating a humming sound seems to be appparent from somewhere near the middle of the car. The noise increases and decreases with acceleration but I cannot hear the noise when in Neutral and the engine is revved. There are no other symptoms.

Does the noise change when the car changes gear?
