a metal on metal grind near tranny
this car is a 95 ecplise five speed 2.0 eng..none turbo...we thought the noise was a dry throw out bearing soo my mech..opened up replaced bearing since was open also put in a new clutch...got all back together we had the same noise...sooo we split apart again went into tranny...looked all fine but did put in a few bearings..in both cases was no metal filings...put it all back together same noise..still ..is a dry grinding noise thats only there when is in idle..and it comes and goes...push the clutch pedal down to shift the noise goes away....we all are wondering what could be from...a bend finger on the clutch plate?? u would think some metal filings would be there..or see wear somewhere this is just one of those what the heck is going on things....thanks for any input car has about 97.000 miles on it..........Dae

Re: a metal on metal grind near tranny
I own a 98 eclipse and I also get similar noise only when the car is cold and stops if I press the clutch but it goes away after teh car heats up. ..So let me know if you find out the reson for it. ...Even I showed it to dealer and he had no clue...so I decided to live with it..thanks

The only thing that comes to mind when you say dry metal on metal sound would be the FW inspection plate rubbing on the flywheel. But that would be pretty obvious to a mechanic I would think, and it should get worse not better when you step on the clutch. Aside from a throw out bearing, thats all I can think of... Good luck with it.

I doubt it is related... but my 92 gsx grinds when it is cold and I shift into 2nd and reverse always grinds if it is started and THEN put into gear. If I shift into reverse before I start the motor, it is fine. I have an ACT 2600 (new) and a new throw out bearing. Noone can come up with an explanation for me either but since it goes away when it warms up, screw it! Sounds like something needs adjusted but nobody (mechanics) have any idea and I'll be damned with this problem b4 I let some mechanic go rootin' around my clutch or tranny w/ no idea what is wrong.
Good luck Nate |
