Hello,
I have a 96 maxima stick and am having a weird noise under acceleration. It is almost like a whistle or howle at sudden high rpms. I have just replaced my belts in hopes that it would remove the sound. As well, this car is not as quick as many that I have driven...could there be a load on the engine that I don't know about? This only stopped squeeky belt sounds at idle. Has anyone else experience this sort of thing? Solutions? Inexpensive solutions? Thanks!!! |

I have the same problem with my 1997 Infiniti I30. This has the same engine as the maxima. I had just replaced my alternator and belt.

Did the problem start before or after replacing the belts? with a whistle/howl noise and a drop in power, sounds like a leak in the intake somewhere. do you still have the stock airbox or have you upgraded to an open air/cold air intake system? I had the exact symptoms but on my turbo eclipse, had to tighten up the clamps holding my upper intake pipe, and that solved the problem. Its a different setup on our Maxima's, but could be the same type of situation if you've got an aftermarket intake installed. Check all the connections/hoses/etc. in and around your air intake. If that's not the problem, I'd take in into a mechanic and have him do a pressure test to see if there's a leak somewhere, as those symptoms you have sound pretty similar.
good luck anyway and let us know what you find out.
