89 Astro starts fine, then stalls.
I have a 1989 Astro that starts just fine, and idles normally for usually less than a minute, and then starts to bog, and will stall if I don't give it a shot of pedal. This is a used vehicle that I just picked up in this state, so I don't know anything about its history. I would like to know if anyone could suggest a logical plan of attack to figure this one out, or if someone might even have a good guess as to what might be causing this problem. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Check the EGR valve by pulling it off and seeing if it is gum'd up. Also the O2 sensor could be toast.

I have tried replacing the EGR valve with another known good one, and it didn't do much for it. I don't want to purchase an O2 sensor to try on speculation. Is there anything else anyone can think of trying before I spend way more money than I have on an O2 sensor. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 89 Astro starts fine, then stalls.
If the goal is to minimize expenses, a good diagnosis is in order. The first thing to check is to do a scan for codes. Then check the fuel pressure. It should be between 9-13 lbs. Start with that and we'll go from there. Ray

I'd check the fuel filter first.

I had a similar problem and I had a a Service Engine light. It turned out to be the Engine Temp Sensor which had gone open telling the computer that it was -40 deg. It was dumping in so much gas that the engine would flood and not run.
