Help me get my Car Running. (Lotsa troubleshooting inside)
SOHC motor on an '89 been sitting for 2.5 years.
Gas tank was almost empty.. gauge read empty and tapping on bottom I couldn't hear any liquid up there. I put 3 gal of 92 octane in there. Before trying to turn over, I removed plugs and they aren't bad, a bit carbon-y but useable enough to get the car running. Changed oil and filter. Old oil wasn't chunky or anything but very black. Filter had about 50 small flakes of copper-looking metal in it (yeah, not good I know). Each flake was less than a millimeter in size. I also put a bit of oil in each cylinder and then hand-cranked the engine about 6 revolutions. Then I cranked with the spark plugs out for about 10 seconds. Oil presure light was on for 2 seconds then shut off, I believe that means I'm getting oil pressure. Put the plugs/wires (yes, correct wiring!) back in. It wont' start. Has no sign of even starting to fire. Turning over nicely, just not starting. So I pulled a plug, hooked the wire back on and cranked engine. YES there's a spark. Noticed the o2 sensor wire was unplugged (well I noticed SOME wire was unplugged and with the help of J SPEC SilEighty realized it was the o2 wire) ![]() Tried again, about 5 tries of 5-8 second cranks each... nothing. No difference. So I decided to pull a fuel line. I unhooked the one that comes out of the TOP of the filter (at least I assume that canister near the passenger side wheel well is the filter?) and there's NOTHING in it. I would think that there'd be some pressure and some fuel up in there? So I'm thinking fuel problem. I did notice that when I put the key on "run" (2 clicks) there's no selenoid sound and no light hum from the fuel pump. I know on my Stealth the pump "primes" for about 1 second when you do that. Is this car supposed to do that? So what's my next (easiest?) step?? I would assume I should pull the fuel hose out from UNDER the filter and see if there's fuel there. If so, it would be a clogged filter. If no fuel there? Clogged lines from old gas? Bad pump? I did pull the fuel pump cover out of the trunk and it looks almost exactly like on my Stealth (matter of fact I was told a Stealth pump would replace the 240sx pump). So I could pull the pump and check that out. Any advice? |
