what's up everybody??
I'm new to this forume and I've read a couple of the posts soo you guys seem to know what's going on!!! I'm having this one major problem with my b16a and I swear its making me go crazy.. This is what has happened in the last week... Try to bear with me.. a week ago my waterpump went... NO BIG DEAL.. I caught the problem early soo it didn't do that much damage.. Because my engine is a JDM b16a parts are a little different than USDM but you guys knew that soo I bought a new water pump for the 95 del sol b16a and it fit.. everything seems fine... I bought a timing belt aswell for a 95 del sol b16a... and I bought a tensioner for a 94 integra gsr cause apparently its hard to get it for the del sol here unless you goto the dealership... But I heard there all the same because there all b series engines... Ok that's the easy part... Timing belt and the tensioner pully wasen't hard to install cause I've done it before soo I knew what I was doing... So I put everything back together torque everything down pefect ready to start... I started the engine and idled at 2300.... That's a normal thing for my engine before this problem... after a minute or soo the engine jumped up to 3000 rpm... after another 30 seconds the timing belt snapped.. WTF.. so I go buy another one.... soo I do everything over again... AFter everything was done I started the engine again and soon after a minute the rpms go up to 3000 AGAIN... This time I stopped the engine so I don't have to buy another timing belt... Confused yet? because I can't figure it out... also after putting tension in the belt the second time doing this I noticed that the belt went loose after 180 degree rotation of the crank.. I did it by hand to see if there was total tension.. but I don't get it.. new waterpump, new timing belt, new tensioner... The thing should be running MINT!!! I dunno its a mystery to me and maybe someone is having or had the same problem... |

Re: A 1st gen b16a problem that will make you go nuts!!
Going out on a limb here, but...idle is affected by coolant temp and pressure, so that MAY be why the idle raised, the system may just be "burping", and the timing belt MAY have been defective, did you inspect the head when the first one broke for damage? I'd say take the TB to Honda and have a tech look at it, and explain wha happened, advice is usually free.

it could be that but I dno't think soo because that seemed to work fine... actually wait.. now that I think about it after I took out the waterpump I didn't even drain the car of the coolant.. I just took out the water pump let some of the coolant fall and reinstalled it... soo your right there might not be enough pressure in the coolant system... I'll check that out thankz for the tip but it doesn't explain why the belt gets loose after I turn the crank... Belts are in new condition and seem perfectly fine.... eck I dunno... anybody else have any suggestions!!!

Was the tensioner new, or used? That could be why it is going out, or if it isn't installed to spec then that could be it too.

could the cam gears have not been aligned properly? if your timeing is off then your idle could be screwy right? I don't see how this could have broken the belt though.

the tensioner is brand new just bought it yesterday... I'm following the specs of the jdm sir manual.... I did however goto the dealership today and he told me that there's 2 bolts behind the tensioner that allow you to position the tensioner either forwards or backwards... I don't have a single clue what he was talking about but I'm taking apart my engine to find out if a)my car has what he's talking about and b) to see if that's the actual problem... I thinking something is fucked up with the housing or something to do with all the commponents of the tensioner except the tensioner itself because of all the strain that was placed when the waterpump went!!

tell me if this makes sense!!!! if the timing belt itself becomes loose while the engine is running wouldn't that make the engine rev higher because its not under tension n/e more?? and then vibrate to the point of snapping?? I dunno I had all the cams lined up perfectly. I set the no.1 piston to TDC on the block and the head.... AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
