Unhappy 1995 olds 88 - dies anytime

1995 olds 88 - runs good. dies at random under acceleration or idle speeds in gear or neutral....
check engine light does not come on until after the engine stops. the "battery" and "hot light" come on first and stay on until the problem clears. When those lights go out, it runs fine again. It seems to take about three tries to start before they go off. I replaced the O2 sensor, it was dirty, the engine runs better but still dies. What should I try next ? the crankshaft postion sensor, ignition module or the computer ? My older computer code tool does not fit the diagnostic port.
thank you for any help you can offer. Tim

does the vehicle have spark when it cuts off? if it does then most likely not the ignition module but still a possibility, try the crank sensor or combination sensor whichever it is called on your vehicle. this is a common problem on the 3800 it stops the spark also

Thumbs up problem solved, for now....

There seemed to be spark since it would re-start but would not run.
After replacing the computer, the problem is solved for the moment.
IFF the crankshaft or throttle sensors are going bad, the computer may not last as long as it should. I tried the computer because the problem was so intermittent but definitely would not run while in that condition.
I perfer problems that get worse making them simplier to diagnose. thank you for your thoughts. Tim

so the vehicle is not cutting out nomore at the moment?if it is im pretty sure its the crank or combo sensor the same problems occured on my vehicle after replacing the ignition module .it ran fine till i drove for awhile then it would cut off with no warning no sputtering just cold turkey! as i couldnt find what it was i kept driving it and the time it would run got shorter and shorter.

You're losing fuel pressure, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

You may also want to look at the Mass Airflow Sensor. It can tested with a gentle "tap" on the housing with the engine running. If it stalls, it's bad.
