Question Q: Headers And Exhaust Upgrade

how much of a horsepower increase could i expect from changing to 3" headers and catback system from stock v6 camaro (98) -- i have dual exhaust and a flowmaster right now - i have k&n filter and have only cut out restriction under the airbox no cold air industion (yet) -/- -- my intake is curved downwards as well preventing me from adding a whisper lid to it ---
so how much of an increase would i get with these additions

Re: Q: Headers And Exhaust Upgrade

By 3" headers I asume you mean headers with 3" collectors. I would go with 2" primary to 3" collector, with a highflow Y pipe. High flow cat, and performance cat back. With that you should see about 15-20 horse increase. I believe they make a cold air intake for your car, I would get one of them. Also, get a computer reprogramer modual. You can dial in lots of things such as gas octain and other variables. You can also customize your spark advance curve. And adjust your speedo for bigger tires and wheels and such. Lots of things for power...

2" headers on a v6. OMG that's a little overkill don't ya think... the header primaries would be bigger than the exhaust ports on the engine...

Even with 383 stroker LT1's people are only running 1 3/4" or 1 7/8" primarys. I run 1 5/8" primaries on mine, with a 3" collector, and that's with nitrous on a v8...

Re: Q: Headers And Exhaust Upgrade

i dont think they make smaller headers for the 3.8, atleast i havent seen 'em, but i definitely see the point hot red z28 is making.
BTW: hot red z28, awsome car. i love my red 94 and i think they were the best body style out of the 4th gen f-bodies

Re: Q: Headers And Exhaust Upgrade

Pacesetter makes a nice set of v6 headers.

You can get them on ebay like so:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33631

And also on some auto parts websites coated or uncoated.

BTW: chevyracin, thanks bud...

Re: Q: Headers And Exhaust Upgrade

Some of my advise might sound like overkill, but I'm a firm believer that the better the engine breathes the better it will perform. And what's the difference in size from a 1 7/8 and 2 inch?

But you have to keep in mind it's all about what you want out of it. And that's a great price for those pacesetters by the way. Check out there website for there MSRP.

I agree with ya to a point. On v8's I think that's very good advice, but that is because we can afford to drop some torque (due to decreased backpressure with 2" primaries) in exchange for some extra HP. The sixers however suffer quite a bit if they lose much back pressure because they really don't have that much as it is, and backpressure is one major contributor to 6-banger fbody's torque...

Re: Q: Headers And Exhaust Upgrade

Ya know..I never thought about that. I get in hotrod mode and my brain screams small block chevrolet. Yeah, now that I think about it, 2" on a V6 would drop some ill afforded torque. I would suggest the pacesetters. Every thing about pacesetter is max performance. I had there cat back system and it blew away anything from flowmaster or edelbrock, hell from any other company. Go for it dude...hell yeah.
