Fuel Pump amd MAFS

Hello All,

Another newbie here from Upstate NY. I have a 1996 Rora with 149K miles on it that I have owned for 5 years. I just discovered this forum and I love it. I see that many of the problems I have had are all listed here. My current problem is the fuel pump. It was diagnosed as having an internal leak and I decided I could replace it myself. The pump cost me $250 at the local Advance Auto. I learned in previous threads here to access the fuel sender through the trunk, thank you. I noticed right away that there was about a half of an inch of wet "mud" laying in the recessed area around the pump. I rinsed all that out, but I am having a problem with locking ring. It appears to be rotted from all that mud. I can't figure out how to get it loose. I tried a hammer and punch, but I have done litle more than destroy it. Any tips for me?

Here is something I had success with a few months back: My service engine soon light was on and the engine was running poorly. Someone had told me to remove the mass air flow sensor and clean it. When I removed it, I noticed that the "element" was coated with dirt. I cleaned it with carb cleaner, replaced it and voila, the light went off and engine runs fine! Thanks for any assistance.

The sender retaining ring must be removed and installed with a special tool. It's just locked in too tightly to do it any other way...

Even with the tool, it takes a bit of muscle.

Auto zone loans out tools with a refundable deposit.. Or ask your parts dealer.

I just replaced the sending unit on my Chevy pickup along with all the fuel lines and it was quite a job. It didnt help all that crud and corrosion in the recess around the top of the sending unit. Makes me want to get in there on the Aurora and clean it out now and fill it with silicone or something else that will easily be removed for when I have to mess with that..

I just got the ring off but unfortunately I sheared one of the dog ears off the tank in the process. Do you think that will cause me a problem?

Ouch! The most likely problem would be a check engine light with evap leak codes (P0440, etc...) caused by a poor seal between the sender and tank.
