1988 735i won't start
I have a 1988 735i that won't start. The fuel pump tested bad so I replaced that. Still won't start. It sputters like it wants to start once or twice but never does. The plugs looked fouled so I replaced those. Again it tried to start for about 1 second or so, then nothing. I think the spark looks a little weak but I'm not sure, I see some blue and some yellow spark. Does anyone know to test the coil and how much it should be putting out? If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Hmm,
Check the connection at the coil, green wire to the #15 terminal.
You do not want to measure the spark, it is in the 30 kv range. You need an oscilloscope to view the spark. On the coil you can test resistance with a VOM, Volt Ohm Meter. #1 to center output is 6000 ohms also known as the secondary #1 to the #15 is .50 ohms also know as the primary On the Motronic 1.0 there is also the reference sensor on the flywheel. On the aft intake brace are two connectors the connector with the white tie wrap is the refence sensor and the other is the tachometer sensor. Sensors are the same just different usage. On the sensor to check them out use a VOM, Volt Ohm Meter. #1 and #2 = 960 +- 96 ohms #1 and #3 = 100,000 ohms minumum #2 and #3 = 100,000 ohms minumum Here is a block diagram for a visual reference to the system. http://members.roadfly.com/kcroncarter/etm119.htm ![]() Later,
