a problem with 79 formulas transmission

I just drained my trany (well, half of it) by unplugging the hose that links the radiator and the tranny. However I put a fuel hose on there and my bird performed very sluggish. In the morining it would not even shift into gear. So I changed the hose again and now it shifts but its still very sluggish. It does not have enough tranny fluid in it, but it should preform good. I am not sure what it is. It could be just the lack of fluid or I might have messed something up. I would like your expert opinion on this.

P.S. (To explain all of my questions and lack of knowledge I would have to blame it on me being only 19 yrs. old and Loving the firebird.)
Help is very wellcome.

Re: a problem with 79 formulas transmission

you may of burned your transmission up, fill it up with tranny fluid and see if that helps, if not take it in and see what the damage is.

I filled it up with tranny fluid and let it run through the tranny and it works fine. The shifting is much smoother now as well. I think that there wasnt enough tranny fluid in the tranny so thats why it was messing up like that.

79 Firebird Formula

I got my 79 eight years ago as my first car. I've overheated the engine, broke down, drifted into a service station w/o brakes, this and that, and it still runs to this day. I learned most of what I know about cars because of that bird. I ve had 2 firebirds since, and theve lived much more happily due to the 79's patience.
