Can anyone give me some info on this TUBE?
Replacing a tired ca16de in an 87 Pulsar with a new one. Have 2 rubber tubes that are cracked and brittle, but I dont know what their function is. Here is the set-up: a metal port extends from the block just above the oil filter bracket; 1 of the rubber tubes attaches to this port (it is about 6 inches long, 1 inch diameter, and has a 45 degree bend in it); the tube attaches to a metal tube (that runs about 6 inches, takes a 90 degree turn, runs about 3 more inches and reduces to 5/8 inch diameter); the 2nd rubber tube (about 3 inches long with a 5/8 inch interior diameter) attaches to this metal tube and then to metal port extending from the back of the rear valve cover(?). Does anyone know what the tubes are called, what function they serve, and what system they belong to? I am thinking "Air" but there is oil on the interior of the tubes. Thanks,

This tube/hose sounds like it is part of the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system. This is used to equalize the pressure in the crankcase with atmopsheric pressure. It allows cylinder pressure that slips past your rings and into the crankcase (blowby) to vent. For emissions purposes this gas is directed back into the intake and burnt. The thin oil coating is just from a mist of oil that is mixed with the gas.
I would just replace the hose with heater hose of the right size. |
