$775 for 40k maintenance work?!?!?!

The g/f and I took her 2001 Jetta into a San Francisco Bay Area VW dealership for its 40k 'routine' maintenance work.

They wanted $775 (plus tax) to do the job.... at least, since it'd 'probably be more'.

WTF? Eight bills for 'maintenance' work? We decided immediately to skip it. We heard 'change spark plugs' and something like 'check throttle linkage' or some such thing before we stopped listening and left.

Three, maybe $400, we could swallow that. But $800? No way, just on principle if nothing else: if it's so important that that car 'needs' $800 of 'maintanence' work at just 40k miles, it's time to buy a different car, that was our feeling. I mean, eight bills, that's two payments on a car with 40k miles on it or a pretty good down payment on a brand new car with no miles on it instead.

We're now thinking about holding onto the car until the hs sophomores start driving in spring and selling it to one who manages to talk his/her parent into spending $11/12k for it. We're not too enthused about having to spend upwards of a grand every 20k miles or so just on 'maintenance' work, that's how unhappy we are about it.

Too much or what? I'm really hoping that this one dealership was just smoking crack because the g/f loves the car. Oil/filter is changed every 3k miles, she doesn't drive it hard at all, no problems with it so far at all.

what exactly did they want to do for that money???

most of that stuff you can do yourself.

go to www.alldatadiy.com and it will tell you how.

check in your maintenance section of your owners manual, or separate book that came with the car. there should be a section that lists everything to do at what mile. easy.
