1990 2.5 Dakota will not start
Hi everybody! I've got a 1990 Dakota w/ the 2.5 injected motor. It turns over but will not start. there is no juice getting to the coil or the pump. All the fuses are good, as are all the dashlights, buzzers, etc. My book shows a "auto shutdown relay" that could well be the problem. Is that the 2" metal one on the left side of the engine compartment seperate from the three 1x1 that are together? Is it supposed to have one lead hot with the switch off? Can this by bypassed in some way? Where can I get this quickly? Obviously, I need HELP!!! Thanks!!

Re: 1990 2.5 Dakota will not start
You can probably make a jumper wire, but why not just go get a new relay for it? If your going to use a jumper wire, get a Haynes manual and use the wiring schematics in the back. Or just go to any auto parts store and buy the relay.
Hope this helps Dan |

What you need to check is if you get any voltage when the key is turned on going to you ASD (auto-shutdown relay), when the key is turned on you should get about a 1 second pulse going to it. This pulse is what primes the fuel, and gives the initial spark. If you do have that and the vehicle does not run, then you can check the hal-effect under the cap, they are known to go bad, it is a cam sensor that lets the computer know that the cam is spinning, there is also a crank sensor that is by the tranny, but I doubt that is the problem. Do not bypass the ASD, unless you plan on putting in a manual switch, and that is more trouble than it's worth. If you are not even getting the initial pulse, wiggle the connector by the engine controller, I believe yours is on the firewall (by the cab in the engine compartment), or it may be on the fender, but sometimes the connections go bad. Hope this helps....
