Question 2000 Camry Keyless Entry Receiver location

I just bought a factory keyless entry system (receiver and 2 remotes) for my Toyota Camry. There are no instructions, of course. Where does the receiver plug in to work. I found out how to program the remotes, but it won't matter until I get the receiver installed. The dealer is able to do the install but wants big bucks, naturally. Where does the receiver reside ? (Under the hood, in the trunk, in the door, etc.) It has a strange shaped bracket attached to it, so it mounts somewhere. Any help in this matter would greatly be appreciated ! - Thanks !

Lucky for you I have pulled my security system completely out and toyed with it quite a few times. But the reciever box is located on the left of the steering wheel, behind the black plastic panel that has the dimmer switch, power mirror switch, and the little blinking light for the security system on it. All you have to do is get a flathead screwdriver and pry that sucker out, disconnect all of the wires from the back of the plate, and put the plate out of the way. After you do that, all you have to do is look up inside of that little hole where the plate resided, and you will see a black box, just a little bit bigger than a pack of cigarettes, all you have to do is cut the little plastic clip off of it that wraps around the main support for the dashboard, disconnect the wiring harnesses, and viola! you're ready to install the new system.

B.T.W. -- What do you have to do to program a new keyless entry remote for the system? Mine is just a little broken right now, and I was thinking about going and getting another one, but had no idea how to program it, so since you said that you knew how to program it, I thought I would ask.

Does Toyota add generic (one size fits all) wiring harnesses to there vehicles. They have all the plugs for the options, but they either terminate the plug or install an option to it? This Toyota that the question is about, did not come with any kind of keyless entry or alarm system. I was wondering if the plugs for it to be added even exist, when the option was 'built-in' at the factory. -Thanks in Advance, CMR

Yes, many Japan-type cars have all the wires there. Toyota and Honda are the 2 that seem to do it most. Toyota even has an alarm that you basically just plug it in!
