Car audio help, and just sayin hi

Hey guys!!

First of all I'll just say hi. I'm new here, this is my first post. I just bought a black 98 legacy 2.5 GT. My mom has had a 97 legacy 2.5 GT wagon for the last 6 years, I loved it so i decided to buy my own. I previously drove a 92 mazda mx-3 GS, which is for sale right now. Ok heres my question. How do u take the stock radio out? and also the stock radios look kinda narrow, is it the normal size? will my aftermarket deck fit in?

Im going to switch the Deck in my 98 Legacy. Im pretty sure they make all decks equal. The only thing Id worry about is the plastic framing, but Dont take my word for it. If everything goes well ask me in 5 days

ya i think i found out, im doin mine tomroro. there are 2 screws when u open the cop holder, adn 2 in the astray. i think thats it.

Yeah, theres a button at the back of the cup holder that lets you slide it out of its track. Then you can just pull the framing off I beleive. I remember seeing a thread on how to take a dash apart at NASIOC

ya I quickly looked in the haynes repair manual, and I think its the 2 screws behind the cup holders, and the 2 in the ash tray. lets hope thats it. I'll tell u how it goes when i actually do it, i think i might do it today if i have time later on

Edit: ScoobyMods.com - GC8 Head Unit Replacement That's for the Imprezas, but everything is just about the same. Added are 5 screws and the cup holder. There are two screws securing the cup holder you'll need to remove. You will also have to remove the ashtray and take the 3 screws out that go up into the dash from that compartment. These screws were a PITA to get out for me, so I didn't bother putting them back in; Since I don't smoke, they ashtray and lighter area will be replaced with a switch panel later on anyway. Hope this helps!

Also, you'll have to mount the head unit directly to the stock braket. There's no way you can use the security sleeve or anything.

Edit 2: And I wish I had a black legacy instead of silver...looks so good with a nice wax job

well yeah. They're both 98 Legacys. Those pictures are from a 98 Impreza RS though I think. It's basically the same though. Some cause the headunit just comes right out...some come out with minimal work like ours...some you have to take the dash completely off. Feel lucky.

Hey, I got my head unit! its nice! The instructions for the GC8 were basically the same. I didnt have any trouble getting the stereo in (besides getting the screws out of the old stereo!!!)

here are some pics! I bought an adaptor so when I sell the car I can put the stock stereo back in.

Glad you got it installed! Looks great! I also had trouble getting the screws out of the stock head unit. I actually had to take a dremal tool to one with a metal grinding disk because I ended up striping it. Other than that, it's a pretty easy install in our cars.
