Unhappy 6.5" Spkrs. in 99EX?

Has anyone ever fit a 6.5" speaker into the 5.25" holes in the doors of a 6th gen? I got Infinity Kappa 6.5s for Xmas and am now faced with selling them and buying a set of 5.25s, or finding a way to make them fit. QLogic isn't an option because it costs more than the speakers themselves, plus they won't guarantee that a 6.5 will fit, they just say that it "might" fit. Has anyone done this install? If I go custom, how hard is it gonna be for a shop to cut the panel to fit a 6.5? Any suggestions or experiences are appreciated.

:flash:

Wait, I thought the fron speaker size in the 6 gen is 6.5. I might be wrong though, it's been a while since I cahnged my speakers.

Actually I'm pretty sure you're right. The person who got them for me said I told them 6.5 a long time ago and now are just as confused as I am. I haven't been home from college to actually see if the speakers physically fit, so this could just be an idiot post....Can anyone verify that the 6th gen has 6.5s?

Angry I'm an idiot

I just walked my sorry ass out into the chilly night air and measured my stock speakers. 6th gens have 6.5s in the door. Thanks for your time, you've been a great audience, drive safe. *Ladies and gentlemen, the lazy bastard who couldn't break out a tape measure has left the building*

Ahh, I see. I made sure to get a speaker with a shallow mounting depth.

hey i have actually just done my 6.5" in my 99 EX today... had Infinity Kappa 2-ways, they were a litttle big so i had to dremel out the plastic housing behind the speaker. if you have a short depth speaker you wont have to do that though. im doing the rear ones tomorrow.. and im wondering what the easiest way to take out the rear speakers is... and also if anyone knows the Honda part numbers for the replacement speaker harnesses for the front and rear. this is definately easy enough to do it yourself... dont bother spending $50+ for a shop to install em for you... hope it helps

Same here, except with Infinity Referance model in my case. Magnets were WAY too big for the speaker baskets in the doors, so I dremaled out the basket enough (didn't tot ally cut it out) so they would fit. ALL 6th gen Civics use "6.5 front, and "6x9 rear for speaker size. Just the baskets in the front were designed to accomidate the small magnet of the stock 30w max power speakers and their acoustic properties.

Installing the rears is fairly easy. Just pop out the several plastic clips from UNDER the metal rear deck from inside your trunk, then CAREFULLY pull off the covers for the child seat anchors, then unbolt those off, and then pull out the rear deck shelf pulling straight towards you till it's all poped out. Then work the shelf out from under the side panels, and there you go. Before you pull the deck out though, MAKE SURE you unclip the harness to the 3rd brake light, otherwise you won't go far with the rear deck cover. Hope that helps you out.

To take out the rear speakers, you'll need to remove:
1) Seat Backs
2) Seat Bottom
3) Side plastic panels
4) Rear Upper plastic panel

I believe in that order. I just got done doing this a week ago. It's a pain in the ass.

Talking

well im almost done with the job so far... the kappas are really large speakers, so they require a little custom fabrication on the doors... and the rears were rubbing the 2 reinforcement tie bars in the trunk, but that wasnt detrimental

in case anyone wants to install kappas or references... they are similar in size and should require the same procedure. here it is:

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

FRONT SPEAKERS:

--theres a panel over the speaker on the bottom of the door, pull it off
--3 screws on the speaker... unclip it
--3 screws in the door panel speaker area, remove it
--theres a screw inside the main handle, remove that. you should be able to gently pry the handle from the door panel as long as you start at the back. pry up a little and then slide it backwards. there is a clip on the front that will break off if u try to pry from the front. take off the power window harness
--there is a screw behind the actual handle that opens the door. take that screw out. then pull it back a little and undo the power lock harness. turn the back cover around on the handle to remove.
--after all the screws and handles are removed you can remove the panel. gently pull the panel off starting from the bottom corner where the speaker was if it gets stuck and seems that it wont come off... try to shimmy the panel towards the rear of the car... and it should slide out after you've popped all the plugs out... and the panel is out... repeat for passenger side

The kappas are too big to fit in the panel... you need to use a dremel tool to take the bell of plastic out from inside the door. a spacer will be necessary as well to keep the speaker from hitting the window rail inside the door. ill post pics once i make it. the infinity's came with longer screws which can be used with a few nuts as a spacer... but the door isnt sealed properly so it doesnt sound right. u should make the spacer

REAR SPEAKERS:

the rear speakers involves removing the rear seats (top and bottom) side rear panels and the top rear deck

--start by taking the bolts out fo the top part of the rear seats. fold em down. on the small seat there should be 2 bolts on each side, and 2 on the side of the larger one. remove the small part, the large one has to stay for a moment these were 8mm bolts i believe
--once u have the small seat out you can remove the backets. the bolts are 12mm if i remember.. unbolt the bracket from the passenger side, then the middle, then the drivers side.. you can now remove the rear seat
--next is the side panels. there should just be a plug on the bottom, towards where the lower seat started. pull those plugs and you can remove the side panels... removal is similar to the front doors... gently pull and shimmy it out.
-- after that is the rear deck. just start close to the front and lift gently... the 2 front plugs will let loose... then pull towards the front of the car and the panel should slide out
-- then just unscrew and unclip the speakers

the installation is pretty much the reverse of the removal... make sure u have a tool to remove the plugs from the bodt of the car and insert them back into the panels... it will be impossible to slide the panel in the way it came out. the kappas came with external crossovers, which i mounted on the inside of the door, i used wire ties to attach it to the tube frame of the door... pull it snug and it wont move.. make sure u tape the wires good, because you get condensation inside the panel, and you dont want to short it all out

if you'd like to be neat and want speaker harnesses so u dont need to cut them off:

http://www.sfxaudio.com/products/dis...p?ProdId=95001

its metra part number 70-7800

i used them so i can return to stock easily later on.. if anyones got questions feel free to ask... hope it helps!

Crazy, I didn't remove my rear seats to install my Infinity Referance speakers. I just folded the backs down.
