12 volt DC point

In my 2001 corolla the 12 volt DC power outlet port does not seem to work, how do i test if it is working or not, and if not working how can i fix it

Is the key in the "on" position? just plug an accessory in it and see if it's getting power (I am sure you have figure this out by now already) or use a volt meter.

To fix it is a little difficult, but like I always says the key is to get an electrical wiring diagram, without it you have no ideal what you are working with.

most likely a blown fuse, check that first, also u can do a quick check with a testlight, ground it to the body and touch the lead in the centre of the port and to check for power

Actually, it should be called the "Trick" Wire.

I had the same problem, no power at the 12V Cig outlet.

I checked the fuse block, no problem there.

(FYI, on a 1993 there is one fuse for both the Radio & Cig.)


So one day I decide I am going to fix this thing if it kills me.
- Removed the ashtray
- Poped out the instrument bezel
- Removed the Accessory box (allows for more working space)
- Removed the small section holding the Cig.Adapter.

Upon close inspection, I discovered what Toyota had done and why I was'nt getting power.

Turns out when your looking at the backside of the cig. adapter, Toyota layered the connectivity of the primary lead (+).

In order from top to bottom:

- Spade (were power connector plugs into) with small crimped wire attached at one end.
- Ceramic Washer
- Metal washer with center sleeve (contact post slides through) with small crimped wire attached at one end.
- Ceramic Washer
- Ground sleave with spade connector

(Sorry, I don't have photo's. But if it's important to post, let me know and I'll take some and put them up here)

Bottom line here is that I found a small 1/4" piece of wire that (I guess) is acting like a thermal fuse (if you will).

I took the thing apart and removed two of the components so the primary spade would have direct connection with the center post of the outlet.

Walla, problem fixed.
