vw solid rear suspension????

I've got a question for any of you vw guys(or grls). I recently aquired a 64 vw beetle and was informed it in fact does NOT have an independent rear suspension. Having actually seen those two axles move independent of each other how can this be? I know a solid rear end when i see one and this definitly isn't that. Can anybody explain this one?
