Re: 86' pontiac6000le questions
Remove the steering wheel-pull the center cover off the wheel (horn button) and remove the nut 1/2 way (you'll see why in a minute)...
Bang the hell outta the wheel in opposite directions front to back on opposing sides til it comes loose from the splines-came loose quick dinnit? That's why ya leave the nut on partway so's it don't fly off and redesign ya face ![]() Now, under that cover that goes under the steering wheel (you'll see the screws that hold it down) are the switches for the turn signal/wipers/etc. You'll noticethat they're modular in design. What that means is an easy fix. Go to the scrapyard and fin ya a replacement switch that looks OK and just squeeze the tabs on either side and IT JUST UNPLUGS AND SLIDES RIGHT OUT! I wish to hell GM had used this method on all it's cars! Then just plug it into your car and put alla the stuff and wheel back on and yer all set! ![]() Oil change is easy: Warm engine up to operating temp (this suspends alla the crap in the oil so it drains out WITH the oil). Put BIG pan under oil drain plug in back/bottom of oil pan-slightly away from it 'cause the oil will pour out quite fiercely. Unscrew the drain plug. Get covered with hot oil ![]() While pan is draining, put another one under the oil filter and unscrew that. If it's stuck on-use a filter wrench. If ya ain't got a filter wrench-pound a screwdriver thru it sideways and use that for leverage (see hot oil bath above-ya should already be covered in oil from before so it shouldn't bother ya by now ![]() By now the oil has stopped draining out of the pan-PUT THE $#@&in' DRAIN PLUG BACK IN! NOW! SO YA DON"T FORGET IT LATER! Now...Open a new quart of oil and stick ya finger in it to get a goodly bit of oil on it. Schmear that fresh oil all over the gasket on the new filter-do it a couple times so ya got it soaked good-this is to lubricate it so it doesn't get all deformed/chafed and leak when ya tighten it. Screw the filter on BY HAND!!!! DO NOT USE THE WRENCH!!! Screw it on tight as you can by hand-you don't have to be Godzilla to get a good oil seal here. Refill the crankcase with the correct amount of oil-check the level befor e adding the last quart-to give ya an idea of how much is left to add and ya won't overfill it. When the level is correct, lower the car and check it again-it'll read different. Start the engine and LET IT IDLE! DO nOT REV IT RIGHT AWAY! You may hear lifters ticking for a second or three or seven but that'll go away once they refill and pressure builds. Once the noise stops, you're OK to drive. Then go take a shower and get alla that oil off'n ya
