Flat Battery, cant get in

Hi

I have left my 1992 525i for several months at my girlfriends while I am living in London. Despite asking her to keep starting it up every now and then the battery is flat and I cant get in (dont think she looked near it)

I have tried lifting the handle and turning the key both ways but that doesnt work, I think it is only on newer models.

Is there any other way to get in or is a brick the only answer, any help would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Re: Flat Battery, cant get in

Hello Besty, I just helped my son-in-law with a similar problem. He has a 91 535i. We were able to open his trunk then kicked in the panel behind the arm rest. Then we got my 8yr old grandson to crawl in and pop open the hood latch. There is a big brass nut located in the rear of the engine compartment, driver side. This nut has a large cable coming out from it. Test it with a voltmeter to be sure that it has positive voltage. We then got a voltage source (I used a 14.4volt ni-cad battery from a Makita cordless screwdriver) and connected it (negative to engine ground and positive to the nut) and this provided enough power to operate the door locks. I won't go into how we came to do all this--- long story. Point is that it worked. The battery is located under the rear seat which must be removed. Hope this helps!

Re: Flat Battery, cant get in

EXACTLY THE SAME WAY EXCEPT IT WAY MY 12 YEAR OLD BROTHER! Be careful though with the kid, make sure he's protected, before we hot on that notion i stuck my arm through the hole and slashed my arm on the chassis...very sharp! have the 4" scar too show for it too... once the hood is open all i done was swap the battery for a new one or jumpstart it using another car...easy as, as soon as they are connected enough power is available to work the locks... im thinking of cutting a bogger hole in back seat one day tho, my little brother is getting bigger!!!

yokotar001 , Sorry to hear you went threw so much just to get the car open. It's real easy. Take a set of jumper cables and go under the car and find the starter. Now hook the + (red) on the power wire for the starter. Then ground cable anywhere you can get a ground (frame motor mount so on.) Now hook up the cables on antoher car just like you are getting a jump.

Wink Thanks

Hi

Thanks everyone for the help

I got in and the car is going great now, I found another way in which is quite interesting and might help some of you in the future.

If you open the boot and take of the cover off one of the boot lights, you can connect a 12v charger to the points. If you leave it for a few minutes you will have enough power to open the central locking - after that you can work away

Thanks again

Besty
