As I understand, it's a highly competent drift machine. From what I see there, you'll probably want to drop the ride height about an inch and a half all around, as well as go to stiffer springs. For the engine, a header, larger injectors (if EFI) and intake manifold would be recommended.
After that, it's just a matter of getting out there and practicing at sliding it around. As well as practicing at recovering. You shouldn't have too much of a problem kicking that beast sideways.

mods should be the least of your worries. Drifting you must experience it. Get used to the movement of the car the way it is. Then when you modify the suspension practice driving it the way you did before, and you should automaticly adapt and become faster. The first mod you should do, if you dont mind is weight reduction. Find out the weight balance of that car. It is most likely heavier up front. You should take off the AC if it has one, take the interior and any luxories out. But by carefull, try and get the car 50/50 weight distributed, or as close as possible.

Re: drifting in Skyline R30
You can use truck stop scales to weigh your car at each corner, and calculate the weight distribution. Remember to put yourself in the driver's seat.
Relocating the battery to the trunk is a good idea in most FR's. There is a sweet spot in the trunk for this heavy object. To maximize this modification make sure you install the battery in the right spot (get a lighter battery?). I love your car. I'd fix up the body before anything, because you'll be in a better mood when you drive. Your chi will be at peace. WARNING: NERD MOMENT That was my favorite car in Sega GT 2002.

Re: drifting in Skyline R30
Heres what I'd do to a MR30 to get some sideways action...
-Locked diff (welded up centre) -Cheap 14" tyres on the back -second hand 16" rims and tyres on the front from a jap importer - silvia/180sx/cefiro fitment would be fine. -Some aggressive brake pads on the back and fresh ones on the front -chop the springs on the back down about 3".... -Stick some decent aftermarket lowered springs in the front end and off you go |

drifting an R30. Sounds good to me.
The weight reduction is the key to your victory. Contrary to pop culture belief, putting several 15"subs in the trunk do not, in fact, add 40+hp. Keep the car in good shape. It is an automotive history icon. What year is that one you got?

Re: drifting in Skyline R30
how'd you go anyway, gettin' some sideways lovin?
I know it won't be the easiest thing, the MR30 with the L24E is no rocket....but it is a willing engine, and a predictable chassis. 1viadrift, the L24E powered MR30's are an aussie delivered model, ie we got them new 1980-85 or thereabouts. They're common as apeshit in the jungle here. They cost bugger all, and have great old datsun parts interchangeability. We didn't get the L20ET (nothing special anyway) or FJ20 models, nor the two doors, only a four door with an L24E or a 5 door hatch.
